Description
Shaanxi Ping Guo PDO indicates the Fuji, Qinguan, Yuanshuai, Gala and Jinguan varieties of apples which grow in the Chinese Loess Plateau.
Production Area
Shaanxi Ping Guo PDO is produced in all of the towns and villages in the 15 departments and regions of the Province of Shaanxi.
Production Method
The thick soil layer in which Shaanxi Ping Guo PDO apples grow is as deep as 80 to 200 metres and is made up of soft loess deposits which are rich with microelements. These aspects contribute to good air flow, moisture and fertility, creating conditions highly conducive to the development of the root system of the apple trees. The high altitudes ensure sufficient sunshine for the fruit, enabling them to become brightly coloured, with a thick layer of cuticular wax and added sugar, acid and vitamin C content. The water needed for apple-growing comes from natural rainfall and the relatively low air humidity discourages the propagation and growth of pests and insects. There are four main growing techniques: pruning and training, decisive production pruning, skilful fertilisation and plant defence.
Appearance and Flavour
Shaanxi Ping Guo PDO apples of the red varieties (Fuji, Qinguan, Yuanshuai, Gala) have a bright colour and the Jinguan variety are yellowish-green in colour. All of the varieties have a thick peel that is rich with nutrients and pectin. The flesh is crunchy with a sweet and sour taste and they have a strong flavour due to the high sugar content.
History
Situated in the heart of China, the Province of Shaanxi is considered one of the most important cradles of Chinese civilization. Thirteen feudal dynasties established their capital cities in this territory and the Silk Road to Europe, Arabia and Africa started here. It is also home to the world-famous Terracotta Warriors and Horses. Since China's reform and its opening up to the outside world, Shaanxi's fruit industry has developed rapidly, mainly in apple production, and is now one of China's leading fruit-producing provinces. With China's entry into WTO in 2001, the Shaanxi fruit industry has entered into the international market.
Gastronomy
Shaanxi Ping Guo PDO apples are characterised by their long shelf life. To preserve the organoleptic qualities they are best to kept in a cool/cold dry place. The fruit is eaten fresh but can also be used in desserts and fruit juices.
