The Montecucco Sangiovese PDO is reserved exclusively for Red wine.
The production area of Montecucco Sangiovese PDO is within the territory of the municipalities of Cinigiano, Civitella Paganico, Campagnatico, Castel del Piano, Roccalbegna, Arcidosso and Seggiano in the Province of Grosseto, in the Tuscany region.
Minimum 90% Sangiovese, pure or with the addition of grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 10%, excluding Malvasia Nera, Malvasia Nera di Brindisi and Aleatico.
Description of product typologies
Montecucco Sangiovese PDO has a decisive ruby-red colour; the nose offers dominant fruity fragrances of cherry and woods, with a slightly floral background and spicy notes; it is dry, fresh and harmonious on the palate, with good structure and evident tannins. It can display Riserva on the label if it the wine has been aged for a mandatory period of at least 30 months, of which a minimum of 24 months must be in oak recipients and 6 months in bottles; the aging period commences November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced. Montecucco Sangiovese PDO Rosso wine cannot be made available for consumption before April 1st of the second year following that in the grapes were produced, subject to the mandatory aging period of 12 months in oak recipients and 4 months in bottles. Montecucco Sangiovese PDO Riserva wine can be made available for consumption from September 1st of the third year following that in which the grapes were produced.
