The production area of Vermentino di Gallura PDO is within the territory of the Gallura area, which incorporates 23 municipalities in the Province of Sassari, in the Sardina region.
Blends
White, Spumante (incl. Superiore, Semi-Sparkling), Passito, Late Harvest: min. 95% Vermentino, pure or with the addition of non-aromatic grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 5%.
Description of product typologies
Vermentino di Gallura PDO Bianco is straw yellow in colour with light greenish highlights; the nose reveals fruity fragrances of melon and pear, followed by fresh hazelnut and aromatic herbs; it is full and mineral on the palate, with a slightly citrusy sensation and a typical almondy finish. It can also display Superiore on the label. Vermentino di Gallura PDO Spumante has a straw-yellow colour and fine, persistent foam; the nose is pleasantly fruity, with rich notes of pear and peach and yeasty hints in the Classic method; the palate ranges from dry to sweet, with fruity suggestions that evolve into vanillery notes in the finish. Vermentino di Gallura PDO Frizzante is straw yellow in colour with lively and bubbly foam; the nose offers pleasantly fruity fragrances; it can range from dry to crisp and semi-sweet on the palate.Vermentino di Gallura PDO Passito has a golden yellow colour, varying in intensity; the nose bursts with ethereal fragrances that are intense with ripe white fruit and acacia; it is full, sapid and pleasantly aromatic on the palate. Vermentino di Gallura PDO Vendemmia Tardiva is straw yellow in colour with light greenish highlights; the nose reveals intense notes of sun-dried fruit; it is smooth and mellow on the palate, with long returns of citrusy and citron notes. Grapes destined for the production of Vermentino di Gallura PDO Passito must be dried on the vines and/or suitable environments. Vermentino di Gallura PDO Passito cannot be made available for consumption before May 1st of the year following that in which the grapes were produced. Vermentino di Gallura PDO, Vermentino di Gallura PDO Superiore and Vermentino di Gallura PDO Vendemmia Tardiva wines often have a more intense and persistent flavour, with possible vanillery notes in wines aged in wood. They can be made available for consumption from January 15th of the year following that in which the grapes produced; from December 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced for Vermentino di Gallura PDO Frizzante wines. Vermentino di Gallura PDO Spumante wine obtained through fermentation in autoclaves can be made available for consumption from December 1st of the year in which the grapes were harvested; those obtained with the Classic method can be put on the market after nine months fermentation and it is mandatory to display the date of the first disgorging on the label.
Additional specifications
The Vermentino di Gallura PDO designation can be followed by Vigna (Vineyard) with the relative toponym.It is mandatory for semi-sweet Vermentino di Gallura PDO wines to indicate the term Amabile on the label. The geographic name “Sardegna” (Sardinia) may precede the Vermentino di Gallura PDO designation, as provided for by ministerial decree.
