The production area of Valtellina Rosso PDO or Rosso di Valtellina PDO is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the Province of Sondrio, in the Lombardy region.
Blends
Red: min. 90% Nebbiolo (locally known as Chiavennasca), pure or with the addition of non-aromatic grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 10%.
Description of product typologies
Valtellina Rosso PDO or Rosso di Valtellina PDO has a ruby-red colour, at times with garnet highlights; the nose is intense, fine and persistent, releasing fruity notes of marasca and cherry, spicy tones and sensations of pansy; it is warm, smooth and well-structured on the palate, with floral and fruity returns, a light spiciness and, at times, hints of wood. Valtellina Rosso PDO or Rosso di Valtellina PDO wine can be made available for consumption after it has been refined for a minimum period of six months, which can also be in wood, commencing the first December following the production of the grapes. Taking the opinion of the Protection Consortium into consideration, it is at the discretion of the Ministry for Agricultural Food and Forestry Policies to authorise the aging process of batches of Valtellina Rosso PDO or Rosso di Valtellina PDO wines to be carried out in the municipalities of Brusio and Poschiavo, which are located in the territory of the Swiss Federation, provided that the aging process is monitored by the authorized Body.

The Valtellina Rosso PDO or Rosso di Valtellina PDO may display the specification of the following grape variety. From red grape variety: min. 90% Nebbiolo (locally known as Chiavennasca), pure or with the addition of grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 10%. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin.
Additional specifications
The Valtellina Rosso PDO or Rosso di Valtellina PDO designation can be followed by Vigna (Vineyard) with the relative toponym.Even if Valtellina Rosso PDO or Rosso di Valtellina PDO wines are bottled within the territory of the Swiss Federation, they must always display the Valtellina Rosso PDO or Rosso di Valtellina PDO in Italian on the label.
