The Valpolicella PDO is reserved exclusively for Red wine. The Designation also incorporates two geographical specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Valpolicella PDO is within parts or entire territory of 19 municipalities in the Province of Verona, in the Veneto region.
Blends
Red: 45-95% Corvina Veronese (Cruina or Corvina) and/or Corvinone, 5-30% Rondinella, pure or with the addition of non-aromatic grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 25%, with a maximum limit of 10% for each variety; other classified autochthonous Italian red grape varieties can be used for the remaining 10%.
Description of product typologies
Valpolicella PDO has a red colour, tending towards garnet with aging; the nose releases fragrances of black cherry, cherry, violet and spices; the palate reveals a vibrant freshness and, if aged, a perfect tannic vein, which together create a warm and smooth wine with a pleasantly persistent finish.It can display Superiore on the label.Before being made available for consumption, Valpolicella PDO Superiore wines must have been aged for a mandatory period of at least one year, commencing January 1st of the year following that in which the grapes were produced.The aging processes of Valpolicella PDO Superiore wines must take place within the production area or in any case within the territory of the Province of Verona.
