Description
The Valdamato PGI is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Rosé, Spumante, Rosé Spumante, Passito, Red Passito and Novello. The Indication also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Valdamato PGI is within the entire territory of the municipalities of Curinga, Feroleto, Gizzeria, Lamezia Terme, Maida, Pianopoli and San Pietro a Maida in the Province of Catanzaro, in the Calabria region.
Description of product typologies
Valdamato PGI Bianco, alone or with specification of grape variety, is medium straw-yellow; the nose offers floral and fruity fragrances, with hints of cut herbs and minerals; it is fresh, smooth and sapid on the palate. It can also be produced as semi-sparkling wine. Valdamato PGI Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, is intense red; the nose is rich with ripe fruit, flowers and spices; it is warm, intense and embracing on the palate. It can also be produced as semi-sparkling wine. Valdamato PGI Rosato, alone or with specification of grape variety, is pink, varying in intensity; the nose reveals floral fragrances and aromatic notes; it is pleasantly fresh and sapid on the palate, with a fruity finish. It can also be produced as semi-sparkling wine. Valdamato PGI Spumante, alone or with specification of grape variety, is straw-yellow and has even, persistent foam; the nose displays delicate and fragrant aromas of almond and vanilla, with an aromatic finish of bread crust; the taste is well-expressed in the extra-brut to dry wines. Valdamato PGI Spumante Rosé, alone or with specification of grape variety, is pink, varying in intensity, and has an even, persistent perlage; the nose is fine and ample with fruity notes; it is sapid and fresh on the palate, balanced in the extra-brut to dry wines. Valdamato PGI Passito Bianco, alone or with specification of grape variety, is intense straw-yellow, at times tending towards amber; the nose is intense and characteristic of the grape variety or varieties of origin; it is sweet, fine and delicate on the palate. Valdamato PGI Passito Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, is red, varying in depth; the flavours are typical of ripe red fruit and are intense; it is harmonious, sweet and velvety on the palate. Valdamato PGI Novello, alone or with specification of grape variety, is red, varying in intensity; the nose is complex, with strong fruity notes; it is harmonious and balanced on the palate, with notes that are typical of a young wine.
Grape variety specifications
The Valdamato PGI with specification of one of the grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, is reserved for wines obtained from grapes originating from vineyards on the producer’s land made up of at least 85% of the corresponding varieties. A maximum of 15% of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area can be used, pure or combined, to produce the above-mentioned musts and wines. Valdamato PGI wines with specification of grape variety must display the organoleptic properties of the specified grape variety, as well as the specific characteristics indicated for wines of the same colour.
