Description
The Val Polcèvera PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Rosé, Spumante, Passito and Novello. The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications and one geographical specification.
Production Area
The production area of Val Polcèvera PDO is within all or parts of the territory of the municipalities of Genoa, Sant’Olcese, Serra Ricco’, Mignanego, Campomorone, Ceranesi and Mele in the Province of Genoa, in the Liguria region.
Description of product typologies
Val Polcèvera PDO Bianco is straw-yellow, varying in intensity; the nose offers a fruity attack with evident hints of apple, enriched by delicately aromatic notes; it is smooth on the palate, supported by fresh tones of white fruit. It can also be produced as semi-sparkling wine. Val Polcèvera PDO Rosso is ruby red, varying in intensity; the nose releases fragrances of black cherry, mallow and elderberry; it is dry, sapid, lingering and persistent on the palate. It can also be produced as semi-sparkling wine. Val Polcèvera PDO Rosato is pink, varying in intensity; the nose reveals fragrances of small red fruit and strawberry which entwine with hints of pansy; it is dry, fresh, fruity and harmonious on the palate. It can also be produced as semi-sparkling wine. Val Polcèvera PDO Spumante di Qualità is straw-yellow and has fine, persistent foam; the nose offers delicate fragrances vanilla and white flowers, entwined with hints of Mediterranean scrub; it is dry, fresh and slightly vanillary on the palate. Val Polcèvera PDO Passito is yellow, varying in intensity; the nose is ample and rich with fragrances of broom, sun-dried grape and balsamic notes; it is generous, intense and warm on the palate, with persistent aromas of acacia. Val Polcèvera PDO Novello is ruby red, varying in intensity; the nose is delicately fruity, with increasing sensations of raspberry and blackcurrant which get stronger on the palate; the flavour is pleasant thanks to the fruity aromas, which are balanced with a dry and characteristic finish. Val Polcèvera PDO Rosato wine can be obtained either by vinifying red grapes with rosé winemaking methods, or through the vinification of a mixture of red and white grapes that have been mashed separately. Val Polcèvera PDO Novello wine must be obtained from the carbonic maceration of at least 40% of the grapes. Grapes used for the production of Val Polcèvera PDO Passito wine must be dried on the vines or on trellises in suitable environments, without the use of artificially heated air.
Geographical and sub-area specifications
The Val Polcèvera PDO can be accompanied by the sub-geographical designation Val Polcèvera PDO Coronata, reserved exclusively for the White wine produced with typical grapes from part of the municipality of Genoa.
Grape variety specifications
The Val Polcèvera PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties (incl. Semi-Sparkling): min. 85% Vermentino, Bianchetta Genovese, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured unaromatic grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin.
