Description
The Trentino PDO is reserved for the following typologies of wine: White, Red, Rosé (Kretzer) and Vino Santo; White Late Harvest and Red Late Harvest (only Superiore); White Liqueur and Rosé Liqueur (only with indication of grape variety); Passito (only with geographical specification). The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety and geographical specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Trentino PDO is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the Autonomous Province of Trento.
Blends
White (incl. Riserva): min. 80% Chardonnay and/or Pinot Bianco, max. 20% individually or combined Sauvignon and/or Müller Thurgau and/or Manzoni Bianco. White Superior: min. 85% Chardonnay and/or Pinot Bianco and/or Pinot Grigio, with the possible addition, individually or combined, of Manzoni Bianco, Riesling Renano, Sauvignon, aromatic Traminer, max. 15%. Red (incl. Riserva): min. 85% Cabernet Franc and/or Cabernet Sauvignon and/or Carmenère and/or Merlot. Red Superior: min. 85% Cabernet Franc and/or Cabernet Sauvignon and/or Carmenère and/or Merlot, with the possible addition, individually or combined, of Lagrein and Rebo grape varieties for the remaining 15%. Rosé (or Kretzer): max. 70% of each, and at least one couple of Enantio and/or Schiava and/or Teroldego and/or Lagrein. Vino Santo: min. 85% Nosiola, with the possible addition of other white grape varieties, max. 15%, with the exception of aromatic Traminer and Moscato Giallo. Vino Santo Superior: min. 85% Nosiola, with the possible addition of other white grape varieties, max. 15%, with the exception of aromatic Traminer and Moscato Giallo. White Late Harvest Superior: Chardonnay, Kerner, Manzoni bianco, Pinot bianco, Pinot Grigio, Riesling Renano, Müller Thurgau, Sauvignon, aromatic Traminer, Nosiola, Moscato Giallo, individually or combined. Red Late Harvest Superior: 100% Muscat Rosa.
Description of product typologies
Trentino PDO Bianco is straw-yellow in colour; the nose is complex and varietal with an aromatic vein reminiscent of apricot, peach skin and quince; the sensations of the nose return on the palate of this harmonious and fresh wine. It can display Superiore and Riserva on the label after the wine has been aged for at least a year, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced.Trentino PDO Rosso has an intense ruby-red colour; the nose offers fruity sensations of raspberry and small forest fruit, with a characteristic hint of pansy; it is warm, dry and slightly tannic on the palate. It can display Riserva on the label if the wine has been aged for at least 2 years, and Superiore if it has been aged for a minimum period of 22 months; the aging period for both typologies commences November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced. Trentino PDO Rosé (Kretzer) is pink to pale ruby-red in colour; the nose reveals an intense fragrance with notes of fresh red fruit, cherry, ripe raspberry and delicate hints of flowers; it is light, acidulous, slightly tannic and balanced on the palate, with the fruity notes of the nose returning in the finish.Trentino PDO Vino Santo varies from antique gold to orange; the nose offers a wide range of fragrances from dried fig to candied apricot, with sensations of honey, spices and citrus fruit; the palate reveals a richly embracing sweetness, with notes of acidity and sapidity and an almondy finish. It can display Superiore on the label if the wine has been aged for at least 48 months, commencing May 1st of the year following that of the grape harvest. The production area of Trentino PDO Superiore Vino Santo is limited to vineyards in the municipalities of Calavino, Cavedine, Lasino, Padergnone and Vezzano in the Province of Trento.Trentino PDO Superiore Vendemmia Tardiva Bianco ranges from intense straw-yellow to golden yellow in colour; the nose reveals spicy aromas which blend with warm notes of ripe fruit and honey; it is full, harmonious and sweet on the palate thanks to embracing aromas of cinnamon, vanilla and fruit jam. Trentino PDO Superiore Vendemmia Tardiva Rosso has a garnet-red colour, at times with orange highlights; the nose is ample and rich with fragrances of mashed red fruit and sweet notes of candied orange and red rose petals; it is supple and full on the palate, with excellent all-round persistence. Trentino PDO Superiore Vendemmia Tardiva wines must have been matured for a minimum period of 12 months, commencing November 1st of the harvest year. Trentino PDO wines with specification of grape variety have the organoleptic characteristics that are typical of the grapes and terroir of origin. Grapes destined for the production of Trentino PDO Vino Santo and Trentino PDO Superiore Vino Santo must have been dried on trellises until the pressing that can only take place after, respectively, February 1st and March 1st of the year following the harvest of the grapes, and continues until they have obtained a minimum natural alcohol level of respectively 16% and 10,5% vol. Trentino PDO Vino Santo can be made available for consumption from November 1st of the third year following that in which the grapes were produced.For all typologies of Trentino PDO Riserva wines it is mandatory to indicate the year in which the grapes were produced on the label.
Geographical and sub-area specifications
The Trentino PDO can be followed by five sub-geographical designations: Trentino PDO Sorni, reserved for White and Red wines produced in the municipalities of Lavis (the district of Sorni), Giovo and San Michele all’Adige with typical grapes from the terroir of origin; Trentino PDO Isera or d’Isera, reserved exclusively for Marzemino Superiore wine produced in parts of the municipalities of Isera, Mori, Nogaredo and Villa Lagarina with Marzemino Gentile grapes and other black grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%; Trentino PDO Ziresi or dei Ziresi, reserved exclusively for Marzemino Superiore wine produced in parts of the Municipality of Volano with Marzemino Gentile grapes and other black grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%; Trentino PDO Castel Beseno or Beseno, reserved for White, Passito and Late Harvest Superiore wines produced in parts of the municipalities of Calliano and Besenello with Moscato Giallo grapes and other white grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. Trentino PDO Valle di Cembra or Cembra is reserved for wines specifying the following grape varieties produced in part of the territory of the municipalities of Albiano, Altavalle (limited to the cadastral municipalities of Faver, Grumes and Valda), Cembra Lisignago, Giovo, Lona-Lases (limited to the cadastral municipalities of Lona and Lases) and Segonzano: Müller Thurgau, Pinot Nero, Riesling Renano, Schiava (Schiava gentile, Schiava grossa, Schiava grigia) min. 85% displaying Superiore on the label.

The Trentino PDO may display the specifications of the following grape varieties. From white grape varieties: min. 85% Chardonnay (incl. Riserva, Superiore, Late Harvest), Kerner, Manzoni Bianco, Moscato Giallo (incl. Riserva, Superiore, Late Harvest, Liqueur), Müller Thurgau (incl. Superiore, Late Harvest), Nosiola (incl. Superiore, Late Harvest), Pinot Bianco (incl. Riserva, Superiore, Late Harvest), Pinot Grigio (incl. Riserva, Superiore, Late Harvest), Riesling Italico, Riesling Renano (incl. Riserva, Superiore, Late Harvest), Sauvignon (incl. Riserva, Superiore, Late Harvest), aromatic Traminer (incl. Superiore, Late Harvest), pure or with the addition of grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%, with the exception of Moscato Giallo, Moscato Rosa and aromatic Traminer.From two white grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon; the least present variety must represent at least 25% of the total and must be indicated after the name of the prevailing variety in the designation and presentation of the wine. From red grape varieties (including Superiore): min. 85% Muscat Rosa (locally known as “delle rose”, incl. Late Harvest and Liqueur), Cabernet (incl. Riserva), Cabernet Franc (incl. Riserva), Cabernet Sauvignon (incl. Riserva), Lagrein - Rubino or Rosato - (incl. Riserva), Marzemino (incl. Riserva), Merlot (incl. Riserva), Pinot Nero (incl. Riserva) and Rebo (incl. Riserva), Schiava Gentile, Schiava, pure or with the addition of grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Province of Trento, max. 15%, with the exclusion of Muscat Rosa.From two red grape varieties Cabernet, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Lagrein; the least present variety must represent at least 25% of the total and must be indicated after the name of the prevailing variety in the designation and presentation of the wine. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin. The Cabernet grape indication is reserved for the wines obtained from grapes originating from Cabernet franc and/or Cabernet Sauvignon and/or Carmenère grape varieties. The Schiava grape indication is reserved for the wines obtained from grapes originating from Schiava gentile and/or Schiava grigia and/or Schiava grossa grape varieties.

The Trentino PDO (incl. Superiore) designation can be followed by Vigna (Vineyard) with the relative toponym.Trentino PDO Superiore wines can be accompanied by geographical or toponymy indications, limitedly for the names of sub-areas.On the labels of Trentino PDO Sorni wines, the indication of the name of a sub-area, followed by the indication of White or Red, can be substituted with “Bianco dei Sorni” and “Rosso dei Sorni”.Trentino PDO Superiore Marzemino Isera or d’Isera, Trentino PDO Superiore Marzemino Ziresi or dei Ziresi, Trentino PDO Superiore Valle di Cembra or Cembra and Trentino PDO Superiore Castel Beseno or Beseno wines can be followed by Vigna (Vineyard) with the relative toponym.
