Description
The Trentino PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Rosé or Kretzer, Vino Santo; White Late Harvest and Red Late Harvest (only Superiore); White Liqueur and Rosé Liqueur (only with specification of grape variety); Passito (only with a geographical specification). The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety and geographical specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Trentino PDO is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the autonomous Province of Trento.
Description of product typologies
Trentino PDO Bianco is straw-yellow; the nose is complex and varietal with an aromatic vein reminiscent of apricot, peach skin and quince; it is harmonious and fresh on the palate, with the same initial sensations of the nose. It can display Superiore and Riserva on the label after the wine has been aged for at least one year, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced. Trentino PDO Rosso is intense ruby red; the nose offers fruity sensations of raspberry and small berries, with a characteristic hint of pansy; it is warm, dry and slightly tannic on the palate. It can display Riserva on the label if the wine has been aged for at least 2 years, and Superiore if it has been aged for a minimum period of 22 months; the ageing period for both types commences November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced. Trentino PDO Rosato (Kretzer) is pink, tending towards pale ruby red; the nose reveals an intense fragrance with notes of fresh red fruit, cherry, ripe raspberry, accompanied by delicate hints of flowers; it is light, acidulous, balanced and slightly tannic on the palate, with the fruity notes of the nose returning in the finish. Trentino PDO Vino Santo varies from antique gold to orange; the nose offers a wide range of fragrances from dried fig to candied apricot, accompanied by sensations of honey, spices and citrus fruit; it is embracingly sweet on the palate, with notes of acidity and sapidity and toasted almond finish. It can display Superiore on the label if the wine has been aged for at least 48 months, commencing May 1st of the year following that of the grape harvest. The production area of Trentino PDO Superiore Vino Santo is limited to vineyards in the municipalities of Calavino, Cavedine, Lasino, Padergnone and Vezzano in the Province of Trento. Trentino PDO Vendemmia Tardiva Bianco Superiore ranges from intense straw-yellow to golden yellow; the nose reveals spicy aromas which blend with warm notes of ripe fruit and honey; it is full, harmonious and sweet on the palate, thanks to the embracing aromas of cinnamon, vanilla and fruit jam. Trentino PDO Vendemmia Tardiva Rosso Superiore is garnet red, at times with orange reflections; the nose is ample and rich with hints of mashed red grape and sweet notes of candied orange and red rose petals; it is supple and full on the palate, with excellent taste-olfactory persistence. Trentino PDO Vendemmia Tardiva Superiore wines must have been matured for a minimum period of 12 months, commencing November 1st of the harvest year. The organoleptic properties of Trentino PDO wines with a grape variety specification are typical of the grapes and terroir of origin. Grapes destined for the production of Trentino PDO Vino Santo and Trentino PDO Vino Santo Superiore wines must be dried on trellises until they are pressed, which can only take place after, respectively, February 1st and March 1st of the year following the harvest of the grapes, and continues until they have obtained a minimum natural alcohol level of 16% vol. and 10.5% vol., respectively. Trentino PDO Vino Santo can be released for consumption from November 1st of the third year following that in which the grapes were produced. It is mandatory for all types of Trentino PDO Riserva wines to indicate the year in which the grapes were produced on the label.
Geographical and sub-area specifications
The Trentino PDO can be accompanied by five geographical sub-designations. Trentino PDO Sorni is reserved for White and Red wines produced in the municipalities of Lavis (in the district of Sorni), Giovo and San Michele all’Adige with typical grapes from the terroir of origin. On the labels of Trentino PDO Sorni wines, the name of the sub-area followed by Bianco or Rosso, can be substituted with the wording “Bianco dei Sorni” and “Rosso dei Sorni”. Trentino PDO Isera or d’Isera is reserved exclusively for Marzemino Superiore wines produced in parts of the municipalities of Isera, Mori, Nogaredo and Villa Lagarina with Marzemino Gentile grapes and other black grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. Trentino PDO Ziresi or dei Ziresi is reserved exclusively for Marzemino Superiore wines produced in parts of the municipality of Volano with Marzemino Gentile grapes and other black grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. Trentino PDO Castel Beseno or Beseno is reserved for White, Passito and Late Harvest Superiore wines produced in parts of the municipalities of Calliano and Besenello with Moscato Giallo grapes and other white grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. Trentino PDO Valle di Cembra or Cembra is reserved for Superiore wines with the grape variety specifications Müller Thurgau, Pinot Nero, Riesling Renano, Schiava (Schiava gentile, Schiava Grossa, Schiava Grigia), min. 85%, produced in parts of the municipalities of Albiano, Altavalle (limited to the cadastral municipalities of Faver, Grumes and Valda), Cembra Lisignago, Giovo, Lona-Lases (limited to the cadastral municipalities of Lona and Lases) and Segonzano. Trentino PDO Superiore wines can be accompanied by geographical or toponymy specifications, exclusively for the names of sub-areas.
Grape variety specifications
The Trentino PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: min. 85% Chardonnay, Kerner, Manzoni Bianco (incl. Riserva, Superiore, Late Harvest), Moscato Giallo (incl. Superiore, Late Harvest, Liqueur), Müller Thurgau (incl. Superiore, Late Harvest), Nosiola (incl. Superiore, Late Harvest), Pinot Bianco (incl. Riserva, Superiore, Late Harvest), Pinot Grigio (incl. Riserva, Superiore, Late Harvest), Riesling Italico, Riesling Renano (incl. Riserva, Superiore, Late Harvest), Sauvignon (incl. Riserva, Superiore, Late Harvest), Traminer Aromatico (incl. Superiore, Late Harvest), pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%, excluding Moscato Giallo, Moscato Rosa and Traminer Aromatico. From two white grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon; the least present variety must represent at least 25% of the total and must be written after the name of the predominant variety in the designation and presentation of the wine. From red grape varieties (including Superiore): min. 85% Moscato Rosa (locally known as “delle rose”, incl. Late Harvest and Liqueur), Cabernet (incl. Riserva), Cabernet Franc (incl. Riserva), Cabernet Sauvignon (incl. Riserva), Lagrein (Rubino or Rosato , including Riserva), Marzemino (incl. Riserva), Merlot (incl. Riserva), Pinot Nero (incl. Riserva), Rebo (incl. Riserva), Schiava Gentile, Schiava, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Province of Trento, max. 15%, excluding the Moscato Rosa variety. From two red grape varieties Cabernet, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Lagrein; the least present variety must represent at least 25% of the total and must be written after the name of the predominant variety in the designation and presentation of the wine. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin. The Cabernet grape specification is reserved for wines obtained from grapes originating from the Cabernet Franc and/or Cabernet Sauvignon and/or Carmenère vines. The Schiava grape specification is reserved for the wines obtained from grapes originating from Schiava gentile and/or Schiava grigia and/or Schiava grossa vines.
Additional specifications
The Trentino PDO designation (including Superiore wines) can be followed by the specification Vigna (Vineyard) with the relative toponym. Trentino PDO Superiore Marzemino Isera or d’Isera, Trentino PDO Superiore Marzemino Ziresi or dei Ziresi, Trentino PDO Superiore Valle di Cembra or Cembra, and Trentino PDO Superiore Castel Beseno or Beseno wines can be followed by the specification Vigna (Vineyard) with the relative toponym. Trentino PDO Vendemmia Tardiva Bianco wines can only display Superiore on the label if they are obtained from grapes belonging to the Chardonnay, Kerner, Manzoni Bianco, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Riesling Renano, Müller Thurgau, Sauvignon, Traminer Aromatico, Nosiola, and Moscato Giallo grape varieties, individually or combined. Trentino PDO Vendemmia Tardiva Rosso wines qualify as Superiore if they are made from grapes belonging to the Moscato Rosa variety. Vendemmia Tardiva wines with the optional specification of one of the following grape varieties is reserved for wines obtained from at least 85% of the corresponding grape variety: Chardonnay, Kerner, Manzoni Bianco, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Riesling Renano, Müller Thurgau, Sauvignon, Traminer Aromatico, Nosiola, Moscato Giallo and Moscato Rosa.
