The Terre Tollesi PDO or Tullum PDO is reserved for the following typologies of wine: Red, Spumante, White (only with indication of grape variety indication). The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Terre Tollesi PDO or Tullum PDO is within the entire territory of the Municipality of Tollo in the Province of Chieti, in the Abruzzo region.
Blends
Red (incl. Riserva): min. 95% Montepulciano, pure or with the addition of grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 5%. Spumante: min. 60% Chardonnay, pure or with the addition of non-aromatic grape berries similar in colour and originating from other un-aromatic grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 40%.
Description of product typologies
Terre Tollesi PDO or Tullum PDO Rosso has a ruby-red colour with light purple highlights; the nose bursts with floral sensations, fruit, sweet spices and tobacco; the tannins on the palate are balanced with warm notes, with a harmonious flavour of fruit and spices. It can display Riserva on the label if the wine has been aged for a minimum period of 2 years, of which at least six months must be in wooden barrels; the aging period commences January 1st of the year following that in which the grapes were produced. Terre Tollesi PDO or Tullum PDO Spumante has a straw-yellow colour and a fine and persistent perlage and foam; the nose displays fragrances of yeast, with hints of fruit; it is dry and harmonious on the palate, in the typologies ranging from Brut Nature to Sweet.
Grape variety specifications
The Terre Tollesi PDO or Tullum PDO may display the specifications of the following grape varieties. From white grape varieties: min. 90% Pecorino, pure or with the addition of grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 10%; min. 90% Passerina, pure or with the addition of grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 10%. Terre Tollesi PDO Pecorino has a straw-yellow colour, varying in intensity; on the nose the impact is fruity and characteristic; the taste is dry, fresh, full and pleasant. The Terre Tollesi PDO or Tullum PDO Passerina is pale straw-yellow in colour; the nose is delicate with fruity notes; the taste is harmonious, dry and fresh. Terre Tollesi PDO or Tullum PDO wines with the specification of a white grape variety cannot be made available for consumption before January 1st of the year following that of the grape harvest.
