The Spello PGI is reserved for the following typologies of wine: White, Red, Rosé. The Indication also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Spello PGI is within the entire territory of the Municipality of Spello in the Province of Perugia, in the Umbria region.
Blends
White, red and rosé wines with the Spello PGI must be obtained from grapes originating from vineyards, in a business environment, with one or more red or white grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area.
Description of product typologies
Spello PGI Bianco, alone or with specification of grape variety, has a yellow colour with greenish highlights; the nose is delicately floral and fruity; it is sapid, fresh and harmonious on the palate and at times lively. Spello PGI Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, has a vivacious ruby-red colour, varying in intensity and tending towards garnet with aging; the nose is fruity, delicate and pleasing, with evident spicy notes after aging; it is full, smooth and pleasantly bitter on the palate, with delicate grassy notes, good tannins and hints of roasted wood with aging. Spello PGI Rosé, alone or with specification of grape variety, has a luminous and intense cherry-pink colour; the nose displays floral hints and delicate fruity sensations; it is fragrant and sapid on the palate, with a pleasant bitter aftertaste.
Grape variety specifications
The Spello PGI with the specification of one of the grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Umbria region, is reserved for wines that are obtained from grapes originating from vineyard compounds, in a business environment, for at least 85% of the corresponding grape variety. Grapes similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%, can contribute, pure or combined, to the production of the above-mentioned musts and wines. Spello PGI with the specification of two or three grape varieties is reserved for wines obtained from corresponding grapes originating from vineyard compounds, in a business environment, on the condition that the wine derives exclusively from the indicated grapes, and that the quantity of grapes produced by each of the varieties is higher than 15% of the total. The grape varieties must be indicated on the label in descending order, in respect to the actual contribution of the grape.Spello PGI wines with specification of grape variety must display the organoleptic properties of the grape variety, as well as the indicated characteristics for the typology of wine.
