Description
The Siurana PDO extra virgin olive oil is obtained from the Arbequina, Royal and Morrut varieties of olive.
Production Area
The production area of Siurana PDO extra virgin olive oil is located in numerous municipalities in the province of Tarragona in the Autonomous Community of Catalonia.
Production Method
The perfectly ripe olives are carefully harvested directly from the tree, transported to the mill, washed and pressed within 24 hours. The procedures applied to the production of the oil are strictly regulated so that the resulting oil is of the highest quality.
Appearance and Flavour
Siurana PDO extra virgin olive oil is very fragrant with a pleasant, clean and sweet taste. It is yellow in colour and less dense when it is produced from a late harvest. The early harvest gives full-bodied, mildly almond-scented and bitter greenish oil.
History
The Arbequina variety of olive from which Siurana PDO extra virgin olive oil is made owes its name to the word Arbeca which is the name of a town in the province of Lleida where it was first cultivated. It originally came from Majorca and, according to tradition, King Jaime I brought it to Catalonia by giving it to one of his subjects to plant because of the high quality of the oil it produced and that the olives ripened very early.
Gastronomy
Extra virgin olive oil is easily degradable and must be stored correctly to maintain its organoleptic qualities. It should therefore be kept in a cool, dark place at a temperature between 14 and 18°C, away from sources of heat and away from other foods which produce odours. It should be used within four to six months of pressing to enjoy its flavour at its best. Siurana PDO extra virgin olive oil is ideal as a condiment or in a vast range of recipes. As it has a particularly fruity taste, it adds flavour to food, so it is ideal on salads, in mayonnaise, in special pasta sauces, conserves and grilled meats. It is excellent for frying at high temperatures.
