Production Area
The production area of Santa Margherita di Belice PDO is within the territory of the municipalities of Santa Margherita di Belice and Montevago, in the Province of Agrigento, in the Sicily region.
Description of product typologies
Santa Margherita di Belice PDO Bianco has a smooth straw-yellow colour with greenish highlights; the nose is defined by intense floral sensations, white fleshy fruit and aromatic herbs; it is smooth and fruity on the palate and has a sapid and persistent flavour.Santa Margherita di Belice PDO Rosso is ruby-red in colour with reflectionstending towards garnet; the nose displays aromas of ripe red fruit which blend together with spicy and mineral sensations; the palate reveals spicy and fruity notes and a sapid structure supported by a tannic vein, making this an extremely well-balanced wine. The vinification processes must take place within the production area, although these operations are permitted throughout the territory of the bordering municipalities of Castelvetrano, Partanna, Menfi-Sambuca di Sicilia, Contessa Entellina, Salaparuta and Poggioreale.
Grape variety specifications
The Santa Margherita di Belice PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: min. 85% Ansonica, Catarratto, Grecanico, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. From red grape varieties: min. 85% Nero d’Avola, Sangiovese, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin.
