The production area of Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato PDO is within the entire territory of the municipalities of Castagnole Monferrato, Grana, Montemagno, Portacomaro, Refrancore, Scurzolengo and Viarigi in the Province of Asti, in the Piedmont region.
Description of product typologies
Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato PDO is ruby red with light purplish reflections that tend towards orange with ageing; the nose is intense, with floral notes reminiscent of pansy and a faint incensey spiciness, at times joined by hints of berries and marasca cherry; it is dry, harmonious and pleasantly smooth on the palate, with good aromatic persistence. Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato PDO Riserva is ruby red tending towards orangey-red; it is intense, persistent, slightly aromatic and spicy on the nose; the flavour is dry, rounded, harmonious and medium-bodied, at times slightly tannic, leaving a faint aromatic aftertaste with woody hints. Grapes destined for the production of Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato PDO Riserva wines must have a minimum total alcohol level 12.5% vol. Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato Protected Designation of Origin Riserva wines, including those with the specification Vigna, must undergo a minimum ageing period of two years, commencing November 1st of the year of in which the grapes were produced, of which at least 12 months must be in wooden barrels.
Additional specifications
The Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato PDO designation, including Riserva wines, can be followed by the specification Vigna (Vineyard) with the relative toponym or traditional name, on the condition that the relative vineyard has existed for at least three years. It is mandatory for all of the wines to indicate the year in which the grapes were produced on the label.
