The production area of Provincia di Nuoro PGI is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the provinces of Sassari, Oristano, Nuoro and Sud Sardegna, in the Sardinia region.
Description of product typologies
Provincia di Nuoro PGI Bianco, alone or with specification of grape variety, has an intense straw-yellow colour; the nose is floral and characteristic with notes of white fruit; it is dry, fresh, smooth and velvety on the palate, with a slightly fruity flavour and ranging from dry to sweet. It can also be produced as a semi-sparkling wine. Provincia di Nuoro PGI Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, is ruby red with garnet red reflections, consistent with the grape varieties used; the nose is full with characteristic fragrances of small red fruit; it is dry and sapid on the palate, with good structure and a long, persistent finish in the dry to sweet wines. It can also be produced as a semi-sparkling wine. Provincia di Nuoro PGI Rosato, alone or with specification of grape variety, varies from pale pink to pink, varying in intensity according to the grape varieties used; it displays delicate fruity and characteristic fragrances on the nose; it is dry, harmonious, fresh and delicate on the palate, ranging from dry to sweet. It can also be produced as a semi-sparkling wine. Provincia di Nuoro PGI Novello, alone or with specification of grape variety, is ruby red with intense purple reflections; the nose is typical and characteristic; it ranges from dry to medium-sweet on the palate.
Grape variety specifications
Provincia di Nuoro PGI wines with the specification of one of the grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Sardinia region, with the exclusion of the Cannonau, Carignano, Girò, Malvasia, Monica, Moscato, Nasco, Nuragus, Semidano, Vermentino and Vernaccia grape varieties, is reserved for wines obtained from grapes originating from vineyards on the producer’s land made up of at least 85% of the corresponding varieties. A maximum of 15% of similarly-coloured unaromatic grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Sardinia region can be used, pure or combined, to produce the above-mentioned musts and wines. Provincia di Nuoro PGI wines with the specification of one grape variety can also be produced as a semi-sparkling or Novello wine, the latter only for wines obtained from red grape varieties. Provincia di Nuoro PGI wines with specification of grape variety must display the organoleptic properties of the specified grape variety, as well as the specific characteristics indicated for wines of the same colour.
