The Pompeiano PGI is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Rosé, White Passito, Red Passito and Novello. The Indication also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Pompeiano PGI is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the Province of Naples, excluding those on the Island of Ischia, in the Campania region.
Description of product typologies
Pompeiano PGI Bianco is straw-yellow, varying in intensity; the nose offers good aromatic depth with evident notes of green apple, grapefruit, hawthorn and bergamot; it is dry, well-structured and balanced on the palate. It can also be produced as a semi-sweet, semi-sparkling or Passito wine. Pompeiano PGI Rosso is ruby red, varying in intensity; the nose displays fragrances of prune and sensations of woods, clove, blueberry and pansy; the flavour is reminiscent of ripe red fruit and prune, with light sensations of tobacco, coffee and spices. It can also be produced as a semi-sweet, semi-sparkling, Passito or Novello wine. Pompeiano PGI Rosato is pink, varying in intensity; the nose displays notes of dog rose, pomegranate and citrus fruit; it is well-structured and fresh on the palate, with a sapid finish. It can also be produced as a semi-sweet or semi-sparkling wine.
Grape variety specifications
The Pompeiano PGI with the specification of one of the grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area is reserved for wines obtained from grapes from vineyards on the producer’s land made up of at least 85% of the corresponding varieties. A maximum of 15% of similarly-coloured unaromatic grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Province of Naples can be used, pure or combined, to produce the above-mentioned musts and wines. Pompeiano PGI wines with specification of the name of the grape variety can also be produced as semi-sparkling, Novello or semi-sweet wine. Pompeiano PGI wines with specification of grape variety must display the organoleptic properties of the specified grape variety, as well as the specific characteristics indicated for wines of the same colour.
