The Murgia PGI is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Rosé, Spumante, Rosé Spumante, White Passito, Red Passito, White Uve Stramature (overripe grape), Red Uve Stramature, Red Novello and Rosé Novello. The Indication also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Murgia PGI is within the entire territory of the Province of Bari and the territory of the municipalities of Barletta, Andria, Trani, Bisceglie, Canosa di Puglia and Minervino Murge in the Province of Barletta-Andria-Trani, in the Apulia region.
Description of product typologies
Murgia PGI Bianco, alone or with specification of variety, is straw-yellow; the nose offers varying degrees of floral and fruity fragrances according to the grape variety used; it is fresh on the palate, ranging from dry to medium-sweet, with a slightly fruity flavour and good persistence. It can also be produced as a semi-sparkling wine. Murgia PGI Rosso, alone or with specification of variety, ranges from ruby red to garnet red; the nose is delicate, revealing fragrances of red fruit and traces of spices and aromatic herbs; it is harmonious on the palate, ranging from dry to medium-sweet, and has good body. It can also be produced as a semi-sparkling wine. Murgia PGI Rosato is pink; it displays delicate fruity fragrances on the nose; it is dry, harmonious and fresh on the palate, with the characteristics of the grape varieties of origin. It can also be produced as a semi-sparkling wine. Murgia PGI Spumante, alone or with specification of variety, is straw-yellow, at times with golden reflections, and has a fine, persistent perlage; the nose is fragrant, with the typical aromas of secondary fermentation in the bottle; it is balanced and harmonious on the palate, tending towards sweet. Murgia PGI Spumante Rosé, alone or with specification of variety, is pink and has fine, persistent foam; the nose reveals complex fragrances which are typical of secondary fermentation; it is fresh and harmonious on the palate, tending towards semi-sweet. Murgia PGI Passito Bianco, alone or with specification of variety, is straw-yellow to golden-yellow; the nose is delicate and persistent; it is harmonious on the palate, varying in sweetness. Murgia PGI Passito Rosso, alone or with specification of variety, is ruby red, tending towards garnet red with ageing; the nose is delicate and persistent; it is balanced on the palate. Murgia PGI Uve Stramature Bianco is straw-yellow to golden-yellow; the nose is delicately fruity and persistent; it is harmonious on the palate, with the typical notes of dried grapes. Murgia PGI Uve Stramature Rosso is ruby red, tending towards garnet red with ageing; the fragrances are characteristic and persistent; the notes of the nose return on the palate, with a good balance between sweet and dry. Murgia PGI Novello Rosso is ruby red, varying in intensity; the nose is pleasant, with hints of red fruit; it is lively on the palate. Murgia PGI Novello Rosato is pink; the nose displays evident fruity notes, typical of a young wine; the flavour ranges from dry to medium-sweet.
Grape variety specifications
The Murgia PGI with specification of one of the varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, is reserved for wines obtained from grapes originating from vineyards on the producer’s land made up of at least 85% of the corresponding varieties. A maximum of 15% of other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, different from those which are specified, can be used, pure or combined, to produce the above-mentioned musts and wines. Murgia PGI wines with specification of a white grape variety can also be produced as semi-sparkling and Spumante wines; Murgia PGI wines with specification of a red grape variety can be produced as Passito and Novello wines. Murgia PGI wines with specification of grape variety can also be produced as Overripe Grape wine. Grapes destined for the production of Murgia PGI Passito and Overripe Grape wines can also be dried on the vines. Murgia PGI wines with specification of grape variety must display the organoleptic properties of the specified grape variety, as well as the specific characteristics indicated for wines of the same colour.
