The Modena PDO or di Modena PDO is reserved for the following typologies of wine: White Semi-Sparkling, Red Semi-Sparkling, Rosé Semi-Sparkling, White Spumante, Red Spumante, Spumante Rosé, Semi-Sparkling Red Lambrusco, Semi-Sparkling Rosé Lambrusco, Red Lambrusco Spumante, Rosé Lambrusco Spumante, Semi-Sparkling Red Novello, Semi-Sparkling Lambrusco Novello. The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.

The production area of Modena PDO or di Modena PDO is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the Province of Modena, in the Emilia-Romagna region.
Blends
White (Semi-Sparkling, Spumante): max. 85% Montuni and/or Grechetto gentile and/or Trebbiano (all varieties and clones suitable for cultivation in the Emilia-Romagna region), pure or with the addition of non-aromatic grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%.Red (Semi-Sparkling, Spumante), Rosé (Semi- Sparkling, Spumante), Novello (Semi-Sparkling): min. 85% Lambrusco Grasparossa, Lambrusco Salamino, Lambrusco di Sorbara, Lambrusco Marani, Lambrusco Maestri, Lambrusco Montericco, Lambrusco Oliva, ‘jagged leaf’ Lambrusco; the addition of grapes from the Ancellotta and Fortana grape varieties, individually or combined, is permitted for the remaining total, as well as a max. 15% of grapes similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area.Lambrusco (Red, Rosé, Semi-Sparkling, Spumante, Novello): min. 85% individually or combined Lambrusco Grasparossa, Lambrusco Salamino, Lambrusco di Sorbara, Lambrusco Marani, Lambrusco Maestri, Lambrusco Montericco, Lambrusco Oliva, ‘jagged leaf’ Lambrusco; the addition of grapes from the Ancellotta, Malbo Gentile and Fortana grape varieties, individually or combined, is permitted, max. 15%.

Modena PDO or di Modena PDO Rosso Frizzante ranges from ruby-red to garnet in colour and has lively and effervescent foam; the nose displays fragrances of cherry blossom and wild strawberry; it is fresh and dry on the palate, with harmonious aromas of ripe fruit. Modena PDO or di Modena PDO Rosé Frizzante is pink in colour, with lively and effervescent foam; the nose is reminiscent of Spring with the aromas blending smoothly with fragrant hints of red apple; fruity sensations on the palate blend harmoniously with the freshness of the body. Modena PDO or di Modena PDO Spumante Bianco is straw-yellow in colour, varying in intensity, with delicate and persistent foam; the nose is delicate with wafts of fruity notes and vanilla; it is dry and sweet on the palate, with hints of yeast and fresh bread. Modena PDO or di Modena PDO Spumante Rosso is ruby-red to garnet in colour, with light and persistent foam; the nose offers a rich range of fruity sensations, with sweet aromas of strawberry and cherry; it is fragrant and fresh on the palate with a delicate hint of yeast, and can be dry, medium-sweet or semi-dry, semi-sweet and sweet. Modena PDO or di Modena PDO Spumante Rosé is pink in colour, with an intense and fine perlage; the nose is distinguished by the fragrance of the floral and fruity notes, which offer hints of wild pansy and redcurrants; it is fresh and harmonious on the palate with hints of rising bread, and can be dry, medium-sweet or semi-dry, semi-sweet and sweet. Modena PDO or di Modena PDO Rosso Novello Frizzante is ruby-red or garnet in colour, varying in intensity and with a lively and effervescent perlage; the nose is vinous with hints of rose, petunia and cyclamen blending with fruity aromas; it is fresh, sapid, harmonious and embracing on the palate. Modena PDO or di Modena PDO Lambrusco Novello Frizzante is ruby-red or garnet in colour, varying in intensity and with a lively and effervescent perlage; the nose is vinous and intense with fruity notes of fruits of the forest; it is fresh, sapid, sharp and harmonious on the palate, with a persistent flavour which bursts with hints of raspberry and strawberry. Spumante and Frizzante Modena PDO or di Modena PDO wines must be obtained through natural fermentation/secondary fermentation in bottles or through natural fermentation/secondary fermentation in autoclaves.

The Modena PDO or di Modena PDO may display the specifications of the following grape varieties. From red grape varieties: min. 85% Lambrusco, pure or with the addition of black grape berries similar originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%.The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin.
Additional specifications
The Modena PDO or di Modena PDO rosé wines must display the indication “Rosato” on the label. As an alternative, rosé Spumante wines may display “Rosé”.
