Production Area
The production area of Melissa PDO is within the territory of the municipalities of Melissa, Belvedere Spinello, Carfizzi, San Nicola dell’Alto, Umbriatico and parts of the municipalities of Casabona, Castel Silano, Crotone, Pallagorio, Rocca di Neto, Scandale, San Mauro Marchesato, Santa Severina, Strongoli, in the Province of Crotone, in the Calabria region.
Description of product typologies
Melissa PDO Bianco is straw-yellow, varying in softness; the nose displays evident floral fragrances of wisteria and jasmine, fruity notes of peach and melon and faint citrusy hints; it is pleasantly fresh on the palate with fruity persistence. Melissa PDO Rosso varies from deep pink to ruby red, acquiring orange reflections with ageing; the nose displays delicate sensations of blueberry and prune, Mediterranean scrub and spices; the fruity sensations return on the palate, on a warm and moderately tannic structure. It can display Superiore on the label if the wine has been aged for a minimum period of 2 years, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced. Grapes destined for the vinification of Melissa PDO Bianco wines must ensure that the wine has a minimum natural alcohol level of 11.5% vol. Grapes destined for the vinification of Melissa PDO Rosso wines must ensure that the wine has a minimum natural alcohol level of 12.5% vol. and 13% vol. for Superiore wines. The production year of the grapes must be indicated on the labels of any bottle or recipient containing Melissa Protected Designation of Origin wines.
