The Marmilla PGI is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Rosé and Novello. The Indication also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Marmilla PGI is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the provinces of Sud Sardegna and Oristano, in the Sardinia region.
Description of product typologies
Marmilla PGI Bianco, alone or with specification of grape variety, ranges from paper-white to amber-yellow; the nose offers varying degrees of floral and fruity fragrances based on the grape varieties used; it varies from dry to sweet on the palate and is dry, fresh, with a slightly fruity flavour and good persistence. It can also be a semi-sparkling wine. Marmilla PGI Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, is soft ruby red, at times tending towards garnet red; the nose is delicate, with characteristic fragrances of red fruit and traces of spices and aromatic herbs, revealing an aromatic complexity deriving from the grape varieties used; it ranges from dry to sweet on the palate, at times with evident tannins and good body. It can also be a semi-sparkling wine. Marmilla PGI Rosato, alone or with specification of grape variety, varies from pale pink to deep pink; it displays delicate fruity fragrances on the nose; it is dry, harmonious and fresh on the palate, with the characteristics of the grape varieties of origin. It can also be a semi-sparkling wine. Marmilla PGI Novello, alone or with specification of grape variety, ranges from red with purplish reflections to ruby red; the nose is characteristic of a young wine and the grape varieties used; it is dry or medium-sweet on the palate.
Grape variety specifications
The Marmilla PGI with the specification of one of the grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Sardinia region, is reserved for wines obtained from grapes originating from vineyards on the producer’s land made up of at least 85% of the corresponding varieties. A maximum of 15% of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area can be used, pure or combined, to produce the above-mentioned musts and wines. Marmilla PGI with the specification of one of the authorised grape varieties can also be produced as semi-sparkling or Novello wine, the latter only for wines obtained from red grape varieties. Marmilla PGI wines with specification of grape variety must display the organoleptic properties of the specified grape variety, as well as the specific characteristics indicated for wines of the same colour.
