The Locorotondo PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Spumante and Passito. The Designation also includes three grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Locorotondo PDO is within the territory of the municipalities of Locorotondo, in the Province of Bari, Cisternino and parts of Fasano in the Province of Brindisi, in the Apulia region.
Description of product typologies
Locorotondo PDO Bianco ranges from straw-yellow to greenish-yellow; the nose displays light fruity fragrances and is ample and intense; the flavour is fresh, smooth, delicate, harmonious and dry, on a background between acidity and soave. It can display Superiore and Riserva on the label if the wine has been aged for a mandatory period, including maturing, of no less than one year, and released for consumption from November 1st of the year following that in which the grapes were produced. Locorotondo PDO Spumante is straw-yellow, varying in intensity, with greenish reflections and a fine, persistent perlage; the nose is delicate with subtle hints of fresh fruit; it is fresh on the palate, harmonious in wines ranging from extra-brut to sweet. Locorotondo PDO Spumante must be obtained through natural secondary fermentation. Locorotondo PDO Passito ranges from intense straw-yellow to golden yellow; the nose is characteristic with intense notes of sun-dried apricot; it is sweet, harmonious, velvety and embracing on the palate. Locorotondo PDO Passito must be obtained from grapes that have been dried either entirely or partially on the vines or after the harvest, using one or more procedures, techniques or types of equipment permitted by current regulations.
Grape variety specifications
The Locorotondo PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: min. 85% Verdeca, Bianco d’Alessano, Fiano pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the homogenous production area Murgia Centrale and Salento-Arco Jonico in the Apulia region, max. 15%. Locorotondo PDO Verdeca is soft straw-yellow , at times with greenish reflections; it has a delicate and persistent aroma and is dry, fresh and balanced on the palate. Locorotondo PDO Bianco di Alessano is straw-yellow and has a fine, persistent aroma; it is dry and balanced on the palate, at times sapid. Locorotondo PDO Fiano is straw-yellow, at times with golden reflections; it has a characteristic intense and persistent aroma and is dry and harmonious on the palate.
