Description
The Lausitzer Leinöl PGI is seed oil that uses exclusively linseeds belonging to the Linaceae family.
Production Area
The production area of the Lausitzer Leinöl PGI is in the historical region of Lausitz (Lusatia) in the federal states of Saxony and Brandenburg.
Production Method
The processing starts with the gathering of linseeds, which are successively stored. Then, an accurate cleaning of the seeds takes place, after which they are toasted and then cold pressed with a spiral press. After the pressing, the final stage of the production process starts, namely the filtration with the use of paper or cloth.
Appearance and Flavour
The Lausitzer Leinöl PGI has a typically golden and clear colour, obtained through filtration. It is characterised by a sour flavour.
History
The origins of the Lausitzer Leinöl PGI date back to the beginning of the 20th century. In fact, already in 1924, the Lausitzer Leinöl was a traditional product, which was much appreciated for cooking. In 1932, the first spiral press was installed in the town of Hoyerswerda, in Lusatia, and in 1945 the proper industry of this product developed.
Gastronomy
The Lausitzer Leinöl PGI has a rather short preservation period and should be used within a month of its opening. To protect it from light and heat, it should be kept in bottles placed in a cool place, away from light, making sure to keep it in the refrigerator once opened. The Lausitzer Leinöl PGI is used as raw seasoning on cheese of sheep's milk and sprout salads, and in addition as basic ingredient in the preparation of various dishes, such as ricotta pie, onion pie, and obviously, roast potatoes.
Marketing
The product is sold as Lausitzer Leinöl PGI. It is marketed both loose, up to 3 kg, as well as in various packages. It is available in cardboard boxes with 30 bottles of 100 ml each, or with 20 bottles of 250 ml each; in single packs with an oil bottle of 100 ml coupled with an empty clay bottle of 130 ml; or a 250 ml oil bottle with a clay bottle of 350 ml.
Distinctive Features
The Lausitzer Leinöl PGI is characterised by a high content of nutritional properties, which have a beneficial effect on the body. In fact, recent studies indicate that linseed oil can contribute to reduce blood pressure, to lower 'bad' cholesterol levels; it has both an estrogenic and anti-estrogenic effect, and has been examined for its cancer prevention ability.
