Description
The Lamezia PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Rosé, Spumante, Rosé Spumante, Passito and Novello. The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Lamezia PDO is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the Province of Catanzaro, in the Calabria region.
Description of product typologies
Lamezia PDO Bianco is intense straw-yellow; the nose is embracing, displaying delicate floral and fruity hints of medlar and citrus fruit, and offering balsamic sensations; the flavour is intense with elements of sapidity. Lamezia PDO Rosso is ruby red; the nose is reminiscent of crushed flowers and berry jams, enveloped by balsamic hints; it is intense and full on the palate, with a decisive tannic note. It can display Riserva on the label if the wine has been aged for at least 18 months, of which 12 months must be in wooden barrels and 6 maturing in the bottle. The ageing period commences December 1st of the year in which the grapes were harvested. Lamezia PDO Rosato is pink, varying in intensity; the nose offers fragrances of pansy, dried flowers and red fruit; it is fresh, sapid, smooth and persistent on the palate. Lamezia PDO Novello is bright ruby red; it displays fragrances of fresh fruit on the nose; it is ample on the palate, with faint balsamic notes and a fruity finish. Lamezia PDO Passito ranges from yellow to copper; the nose displays fragrances of dried apricot, spices and traces of honey; it is sweet, warm and embracing on the palate. Passito wines must be obtained from grapes that have been dried naturally on the vines and/or trellises; they can be partially dried with the aid of ventilated air. Lamezia PDO Spumante is pale straw-yellow and has a consistent perlage; the fruity fragrances on the nose are wrapped in notes of bread crust and slight acidity; it is fresh on the palate, with notes of citrus fruit and hints of almond and vanilla. Lamezia PDO Spumante Rosé is delicate pink and has a persistent perlage; the nose displays fruity notes entwined with balsamic traces; it is warm and embracing on the palate, with a long fruity finish. Spumante wines must be produced exclusively with the Classic Method. The base wine can be made with a mixture of wines of different vintages; the tirage processes can start on February 1st of the year following that in which the grapes used to produce the younger base wine were produced. The wines must be matured on the lees for a period of at least 9 months, commencing from the tirage date.
Grape variety specifications
The Lamezia PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: max. 85% Greco Bianco, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured unaromatic grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. From red grape varieties: max. 85% Greco Nero, Gaglioppo Mantonico, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured unaromatic grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin.
