Description
The Ischia PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red and Spumante; Red Passito (only with specification of grape variety). The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Ischia PDO is within the territory of the island of Ischia, in the Province of Naples, in the Campania region.
Description of product typologies
Ischia PDO Bianco is straw-yellow with greenish reflections; the nose displays fragrances ranging from floral to aromatic herbs and ripe white fleshy fruit; although the sapidity on the palate is powerful, it is sweetened by fruity hints and softened by a solid, warm body. It can display Superiore on the label. Ischia PDO Rosso is ruby red, varying in intensity; the nose is dominated by vegetal fragrances which are followed by hints of ripe fruit; it is fresh, slightly tannic and sapid on the palate, with an almondy finish. Ischia PDO Spumante is straw-yellow, varying in depth, and has fine, persistent foam; the nose is delicate and characteristic; it is dry and fresh on the palate, with notes of vanilla, wild flowers and freshly baked bread. Ischia PDO Passito with specification of grape variety has the organoleptic properties that are typical of the grapes and terroir of origin. Before being released for consumption, Ischia PDO Bianco and Ischia PDO Bianco Superiore must have been matured in the bottle for at least 30 days; for Ischia PDO Rosso the minimum period is 90 days.
Grape variety specifications
Ischia PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: min. 85% Biancolella, Forastera, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. From red grape varieties: min. 85% Piedirosso or Per’ e Palummo (incl. Passito), pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin. The grapes used for the production of Ischia PDO Per’ e Palummo Passito must have been dried on the vines or after the harvest, in whole or in part, until reaching a minimum natural alcohol level of 14.5% vol.

The Ischia PDO designation can be followed by the specification Vigna (Vineyard) with the relative toponym.
