The production area of Golfo del Tigullio-Portofino PDO or Portofino PDO is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the Province of Genoa, in the Liguria region.
Description of product typologies
Golfo del Tigullio-Portofino PDO or Portofino PDO Bianco is pale straw-yellow to golden yellow; the nose is fresh and bursts with fragrances of shrub flowers and notes of white ripe fruit; it is dry, harmonious and sapid on the palate, delicately minerally with fruity undertones. It can also be a semi-sparkling wine. Golfo del Tigullio-Portofino PDO or Portofino PDO Rosso is ruby red, varying in intensity; the nose is fragrant with ripe cherry and violet, with good structure and well-defined tannins; it is dry, light and harmonious on the palate. It can also be a semi-sparkling wine. Golfo del Tigullio-Portofino PDO or Portofino PDO Rosato is pink; it is vinous on the nose, with an intense delicate fragrance; it is fresh and harmonious on the palate, with delicate fruity and floral notes. It can also be a semi-sparkling wine. Golfo del Tigullio-Portofino PDO or Portofino PDO Spumante is straw-yellow with light, persistent foam; the nose is delicate and intense; the extra-brut and dry wines are fresh on the palate. Natural fermentation in autoclaves or in the bottle must be used for the gasification processes of Spumante wines; the addition of carbon dioxide is not permitted. Golfo del Tigullio-Portofino PDO or Portofino PDO Passito is golden yellow, varying in depth; the nose is ample, intense and persistent; it is warm, rich, sweet and sapid on the palate, full and persistent. Grapes destined for the production of Golfo del Tigullio-Portofino PDO or Portofino PDO Passito wines (including those with specification of grape variety) must be dried on the vines, on trellises, or in suitable environments, without the use of artificially heated air. The wine can be released for consumption from November 1st of the year following that in which the grapes were produced. Golfo del Tigullio-Portofino PDO or Portofino PDO Novello is ruby red, varying in intensity; the nose is fine and characteristic; it is dry on the palate and medium-bodied.

The Golfo del Tigullio-Portofino PDO or Portofino PDO can be accompanied by the geographical sub-designation Golfo del Tigullio-Portofino PDO or Portofino PDO Costa dei Fieschi, which is reserved for the following types of wine: White (incl. Spumante and Passito), Red, Rosé and Moscato (incl. Passito) produced with grapes that are typical of the terroir of origin.
Grape variety specifications
The Golfo del Tigullio-Portofino PDO or Portofino PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: min. 85% Vermentino, Bianchetta Genovese, Scimiscià (Cimixà), pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured unaromatic grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%; Moscato (incl. Passito): 100% Moscato Bianco. From red grape varieties: min. 85% Ciliegiolo, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured unaromatic grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin.
