Production Area
The production area of Girò di Cagliari PDO is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the provinces of Sud Sardegna, Cagliari and Oristano, in the Sardinia region.
Blends
Red, Liqueur (including Riserva): Girò 100%. The addition of other grape berries originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Sardinia region is permitted in order to facilitate pollination.
Description of product typologies
Girò di Cagliari PDO is various tones of ruby-red in colour; the nose is intense and extremely light, offering fragrances of small red berries; the palate usually displays a sweetish note, highlighting good balance and a fairly long finish. Girò di Cagliari PDO Liquoroso is red in colour, varying in intensity and tending towards orange with aging; the nose is intense and light, with jammy and syrupy red fruit blending pleasantly with small dried biscuits; it is varying degrees of sweet on the palate, with a characteristic fruitiness and a defined minerality which appears above all in the aftertaste and long, persistent finish. It can display Riserva on the label if the wine has undergone a minimum aging period of 2 years, of which at least 1 year must be in oak or chestnut barrels; the aging period commences on the date in which the wine was distilled. The addition of alcohol of vinous origin to the must or base wine is permitted in the production of Girò di Cagliari PDO Liquoroso wine.Girò di Cagliari PDO wines cannot be made available for consumption before July 1st of the year following that in which the grapes were produced.

The Girò di Cagliari PDO designation may be preceded by the geographic name “Sardegna” (Sardinia) as provided for by ministerial decree.
