The Friuli Isonzo PDO or Isonzo del Friuli PDO is reserved for the following typologies of wine: White, Red, Rosé Late Harvest and Red Spumante; White Spumante and Spumante Rosé (only with indication of grape variety). The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Friuli Isonzo PDO or Isonzo del Friuli PDO is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the Province of Gorizia, in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.
Blends
White (incl. Semi-Sparkling): Chardonnay and/or Malvasia and/or Pinot Blanc and/or Pinot Gris and/or Riesling Italico and/or Riesling Renano and/or Sauvignon and/or Verduzzo and/or Tocai Friulano. Red (incl. Semi-Sparkling, Spumante): Cabernet Franc and/or Cabernet Sauvignon and/or Merlot and/or Pinot Noir and/or Franconia and/or Schioppettino and/or Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso and/or Pignolo. Late Harvest: Friulano, Sauvignon, Verduzzo Friulano, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Malvasia Istriana, vinified individually or together after having undergone natural drying and late harvesting.
Description of product typologies
Friuli Isonzo PDO or Isonzo del Friuli PDO Bianco is straw-yellow in colour, varying in depth; the nose bursts with fruity notes; the palate is dry or semi-sweet, fairly lively, on the whole harmonious, slightly tannic and tart. It can also be a Semi-Sparkling wine. Friuli Isonzo PDO or Isonzo del Friuli PDO Rosso has a strong ruby-red colour; the nose offers slightly grassy sensations; it is dry or semi-sweet, full, harmonious and tranquil on the palate, with good body. It can also be a Semi-Sparkling wine. Friuli Isonzo PDO or Isonzo del Friuli PDO Rosé is pink to smooth cherry-pink in colour; the nose is slightly vinous, pleasing and characteristic it is dry or semi-sweet, full, fresh and tranquil on the palate. It can also be a Semi-Sparkling wine. Friuli Isonzo PDO or Isonzo del Friuli PDO Rosé must have been produced with the “rosé” vinification of red grapes or with the vinification of red and white grapes together, even if they were mashed separately.Friuli Isonzo PDO or Isonzo del Friuli PDO Vendemmia Tardiva is golden yellow to amber in colour, varying in intensity; the nose is intense and complex with mossy notes; it is sweet and harmonious on the palate. Grapes used for the production of Friuli Isonzo PDO or Isonzo del Friuli PDO Vendemmia Tardiva wines must have been dried on the vines in order to ensure a minimum natural alcohol level of 13% and they must not have been harvested before 30 days after the beginning of the harvesting period. Friuli Isonzo PDO or Isonzo del Friuli PDO Spumante Rosso is characterised by fine and persistent foam and a strong ruby-red colour; the nose is pleasing with fruity notes; it is dry or semi-sweet and characteristic on the palate.Friuli Isonzo PDO or Isonzo del Friuli PDO Spumante Bianco or Spumante Rosé wines with specification of the grape variety have the organoleptic characteristics typical of the grapes and terroir of origin.

From red grape varieties: Cabernet (Cabernet Franc and/or Cabernet Sauvignon) Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Franconia, Schioppettino, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Pignolo, pink Muscat (Rosé, incl. Spumante) The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin.
