The Friuli Grave PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Rosé and Novello; Spumante (only with specification of grape variety). The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Friuli Grave PDO is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the provinces of Udine and Pordenone, in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.
Description of product typologies
Friuli Grave PDO Bianco is straw-yellow, varying in intensity; the nose is pleasant and light, with fruity notes; it is harmonious, balanced and sapid on the palate, with good acidity. It can display Superiore on the label. Friuli Grave PDO Rosso is ruby red, tending towards garnet red with ageing; the fragrances are intense and light when the wine is young and more structured with ageing; it is dry or mouth-filling on the palate, and always harmonious. It can display Superiore on the label. Friuli Grave PDO Rosato is pink; the nose is light; it is various degrees of sweet and harmonious on the palate, lively in the sparkling wines. It can also be a semi-sparkling wine. Friuli Grave PDO Novello has a characteristic ruby red colour; the nose offers evident fruity and vinous notes; it is characteristic, sapid and dry on the palate. Friuli Grave PDO Spumante with specification of the grape variety has the organoleptic properties typical of the grapes and terroir of origin. It can be put on the market as Extra-brut, Brut, Extra-dry, Dry and Demi-sec.

The Friuli Grave PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties Pinot Grigio (incl. Superiore), Chardonnay (incl. Superiore, Spumante, Semi-Sparkling), Pinot Bianco (incl. Superiore, Spumante, Semi-Sparkling), Riesling (from Riesling Renano, incl. Superiore), Sauvignon (incl. Superiore), Friulano (incl. Superiore), Traminer Aromatico (incl. Superiore), Verduzzo Friulano (incl. Superiore, Semi-Sparkling). From red grape varieties: min. 95% Cabernet (from Cabernet Franc and/or Cabernet Sauvignon and/or Carmenère, incl. Superiore), Cabernet Franc (incl. Superiore), Cabernet Sauvignon (incl. Superiore), Merlot (incl. Superiore), Pinot Nero (incl. Superiore, Spumante if white vinified), Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso (incl. Superiore).The addition of a maximum of 15% Pinot Nero, or a maximum of 10% of other similarly-coloured grapes originating from grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, is permitted in the production of Friuli Grave PDO Chardonnay Spumante and Friuli Grave PDO Pinot Bianco Spumante. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin.
