The Friuli-Annia PDO is reserved for the following typologies of wine: White, Red, Rosé and Spumante. The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Friuli-Annia PDO is within the territory of the municipalities of Carlino, San Giorgio di Nogaro, Marano Lagunare, Torviscosa, Castions di Strada, Porpetto, Bagnaria Arsa and Muzzana del Turgnano in the Province of Udine, in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.
Blends
White (incl. Semi-Sparkling): non-aromatic white grapes originating from grape varieties indicated in the production specification and suitable for cultivation in the concerned area. Red (incl. Riserva), Rosé (incl. Semi-Sparkling): red grapes originating from grape varieties indicated in the production specification and suitable for cultivation in the concerned area. Novello: black grapes, musts or wines originating from grape varieties indicated in the production specification and suitable for cultivation in the concerned area.
Description of product typologies
Friuli-Annia PDO Bianco is straw-yellow in colour, varying in depth; the nose is pleasing with fruity notes; it is fresh and harmonious on the palate. It can also be a Semi-Sparkling wine. Friuli-Annia PDO Rosso is ruby-red in colour with garnet highlights; the nose offers intense and spicy fragrances; it is full-bodied, dry and harmonious on the palate. It can display Riserva on the label if the wine has undergone a minimum aging period of two years, of which at least 12 months in wood, commencing November 11th of the year in which the grapes were produced. Friuli-Annia PDO Rosé varies from pink to smooth cherry-pink in colour; the nose is pleasing and light; it is dry, harmonious and full on the palate. It can also be a Semi-Sparkling wine. Friuli-Annia PDO Spumante is characterised by a bright pale straw-yellow colour; the nose is characteristic with fruity notes; it is light, smooth, full-bodied and brut or demi-sec on the palate. The production of Friuli-Annia PDO Spumante is permitted on the condition that the cuvee is obtained from blends or cuts of grapes, musts or wines deriving from the Chardonnay and/or Pinot Bianco grape varieties, or other white grapes, max. 10%, and that the wine is sold as Brut or Demi-sec.
Grape variety specifications
The Friuli-Annia PDO may display the specifications of the following grape varieties. From white grape varieties: min. 90% Friulano, Pinot Bianco (incl. Semi-Sparkling), Pinot Grigio, Verduzzo Friulano (incl. Semi-Sparkling), Sauvignon, Chardonnay (incl. Semi-Sparkling), Malvasia (Istriana) (incl. Semi-Sparkling), Traminer Aromatico, pure or with the addition of grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 10%. From red grape varieties (incl. Riserva): min. 90% Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, pure or with the addition of grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 10%.
