The Emilia PGI or dell’Emilia PGI is reserved for the following typologies of wine: White, Red, Rosé and Novello (only with specification of grape variety). The Indication also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Emilia PGI or dell’Emilia PGI is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the provinces of Ferrara, Modena, Parma, Piacenza and Reggio Emilia, and parts of the Province of Bologna, in the Emilia-Romagna region.
Blends
White, red and rosé wines with the Emilia PGI or dell’Emilia PGI must be obtained from grapes originating from vineyards, in a business environment, with one or more red/white grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area.
Description of product typologies
Emilia PGI or dell’Emilia PGI Bianco, alone or with specification of grape variety, is straw-yellow in colour, varying in intensity; the nose offers varying floral and fruity fragrances depending on the grape variety used; it is dry and fresh on the palate, with a slightly fruity flavour and good persistence. It can also be produced as Semi-Sparkling, Spumante or Passito wine. Emilia PGI or dell’Emilia PGI Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, is ruby-red in colour, varying in intensity; the nose is delicate, with notes ranging from ripe fruity, spicy and floral, often pansy, depending on the varietal composition and cultivation area; it is dry and sapid on the palate, at times with evident tannins, and has good body and a persistent finish. It can also be produced as Semi-Sparkling, Spumante, Novello or Passito wine. Emilia PGI or dell’Emilia PGI Rosé, alone or with specification of grape variety, is pink in colour, varying in intensity; it displays delicate floral notes on the nose, accompanied by more decisive fruity notes; the palate is dry, harmonious and fresh, with the characteristics of the grape variety of origin. It can also be a Semi-Sparkling wine. Emilia PGI or dell’Emilia PGI Novello, alone or with specification of grape variety, is bright ruby-red in colour; the nose is vinous with strong fruity notes; it is dry, harmonious and fresh on the palate, with the characteristics of the grape variety of origin. It can also be produced as Semi-Sparkling or Spumante wine.
Grape variety specifications
The Emilia PGI or dell’Emilia PGI, with the specification of one of the grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Emilia- Romagna region, is reserved for wines that are obtained from grapes originating from vineyard compounds, in a business environment, for at least 85% of the corresponding grape variety. Grapes similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%, can contribute, pure or combined, to the production of the above-mentioned musts and wines. Emilia PGI or dell’Emilia PGI wines with the specification of one of the grape varieties can also be produced as Semi-Sparkling wines, with the exception of the following grapes: Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Cabernet, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Riesling Italico and Sangiovese. If Emilia PGI or dell’Emilia PGI wines with specification of the Lambrusco variety are put on the market in containers with a capacity of less than 6 litres, they can only be produced as Semi-Sparkling. Emilia PGI or dell’Emilia PGI wines with specification of a black grape variety can also be produced as Novello. Emilia PGI or dell’Emilia PGI Novello has a bright ruby-red colour; the nose is vinous with strong fruity notes; it is dry, fresh and sapid on the palate.Emilia PGI or dell’Emilia PGI wines with specification of grape variety must display the organoleptic properties of the grape variety, as well as the indicated characteristics for the typology of wine.
