The Colli Euganei PDO is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red and Spumante; Novello (only with specification of grape variety). The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Colli Euganei PDO is within the territory of 17 municipalities in the Province of Padua, in the Veneto region.
Description of product typologies
Colli Euganei PDO Bianco is straw-yellow, varying in intensity; the nose displays a moderately intense fragrance with notes of flowers and mild fruit; it is harmonious, lively, well-structured and sapid on the palate. Colli Euganei PDO Rosso varies from ruby red to more intense and darker shades; the nose displays fragrances of berries and red fruit, and all of the wines reveal rich notes of grass, liquorice, tobacco and cocoa; it is dry on the palate, ranging from slightly to moderately tannic. It can display Riserva on the label if the wine has undergone an ageing period of at least 24 months, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced. Colli Euganei PDO Spumante is straw-yellow with persistent foam; it is delicate and elegant on the nose. The organoleptic properties of Colli Euganei PDO Novello wines with specification of grape variety are typical of the grapes and terroir of origin.
Grape variety specifications
The Colli Euganei PDO may display the following grape variety specifications. From white grape varieties: min. 85% Serprino (local synonym of the Glera grape variety; Spumante, Semi-Sparkling), Tai, Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Garganega, Moscato (incl. Spumante), Pinello (Spumante, Semi-Sparkling), Pinot Bianco, Manzoni Bianco, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%; for Moscato, obtained from Moscato Bianco, min. 90%, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 10%. From red grape varieties: min. 85% Cabernet (from Cabernet Franc and/or Cabernet Sauvignon and/or Carmenère, (incl. Riserva) Cabernet Franc (incl. Riserva), Cabernet Sauvignon (incl. Riserva), Merlot (incl. Novello, Riserva), Raboso (from Raboso Veronese and/or Raboso Piave), including Riserva, Carménère (incl. Riserva), pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%. The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin.
