The Cirò PDO is reserved for the following typologies of wine: White, Red and Rosé.
Production Area
The production area of Cirò PDO is within the entire territory of the municipalities of Cirò and Cirò Marina, and parts of Melissa and Crucoli in the Province of Crotone, in the Calabria region.
Blends
White: min. 80% Greco, pure or with the addition of grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 20%. Red, Rosé (including Classico, Classico Superiore, Classico Superiore Riserva, Superiore, Superiore Riserva): min. 80% Gaglioppo, pure or with the addition of grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 20%, excluding the Barbera, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Merlot grape varieties, which can be used up to a maximum of 10%.
Description of product typologies
Cirò PDO Bianco is straw-yellow in colour, varying in intensity, with possible greenish reflections; floral fragrances of magnolia and orange blossom emerge on the nose, with fruity aromas of candied citrus and vanilla; it is sapid and fresh on the palate, with a long almondy persistence. Cirò PDO Rosso is medium ruby-red in colour, varying in colour, with purple reflections; the nose displays hues of liqueur fruit and balsamic and spicy hints; a tannic streak is enhanced by a tart note and supported by a strong fruity and irony element. It can display Classico, Classico Superiore, Classico Superiore Riserva, Superiore, Superiore Riserva on the label.Cirò PDO Rosé is pink in colour, varying in intensity; the nose is distinguished by delicate fruity and sweet spicy fragrances; it is dry, mouth-filling, fresh, harmonious and pleasing on the palate. Cirò PDO Rosso wine cannot be made available for consumption before June 1st of the year following that in which the grapes were produced.Cirò PDO Superiore and Classico Superiore can only display Riserva on the label if the wine has undergone an aging period of at least 2 years. This period commences January 1st of the year following that in which the grapes were produced.
