The production area of Cinque Terre PDO and Cinque Terre Sciacchetrà PDO is within the territory of a few municipalities in the Province of La Spezia, in the Liguria region.
Description of product typologies
Cinque Terre PDO Bianco varies from straw-yellow to vivid golden yellow, varying in intensity; it offers sharp and persistent fragrances on the nose, fine and elegant, with hints of honey, white flowers and delicate citrusy notes; it is dry and balanced on the palate, with fresh, sapid notes, at times mineral, and a long, persistent finish. Cinque Terre Sciacchetrà PDO is golden yellow to brownish-amber, varying in intensity; it is intense on the nose, at times with hints of honey, spices and dried fruit; it is sweet on the palate, at times tannic, well-structured and persistent, with an almondy aftertaste. It may display Riserva on the label. Cinque Terre Sciacchetrà PDO must be obtained from grapes that have been partially dried after the harvest, in suitable, ventilated areas, until reaching a sugar content with a potential alcohol level of at least 19% vol. The vinification of the grapes used to produce Cinque Terre Sciacchetrà PDO and Cinque Terre Sciacchetrà PDO Riserva cannot take place before October 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced. Cinque Terre Sciacchetrà PDO can be released for consumption after October 1st of the year following that in which the grapes were harvested. It is mandatory for the labels of Cinque Terre PDO and Cinque Terre Sciacchetrà PDO wines to indicate the year in which the grapes were produced.
Geographical and sub-area specifications
Only the Cinque Terre PDO Designation can be accompanied by three geographical sub-designations: Cinque Terre PDO Costa de Sera, Cinque Terre PDO Costa de Campu and Cinque Terre PDO Costa da Posa. All three sub-designations are White wine produced with: min. 80% Bosco and/or Albarola and/or Vermentino, pure or with the addition of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 20%. The wines range from straw-yellow to golden yellow, varying in intensity and vivid; the nose reveals yellow fruit, especially plum, among notes of berries and medicinal herbs; they are dry sapid and intense on the palate.
