The Calabria PGI is reserved for the following types of wine: White, Red, Rosé, White Spumante, Red Spumante, Rosé Spumante, White Passito, Red Passito and Novello. The Indication also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.

Description of product typologies
Calabria PGI Bianco, alone or with the specification of grape variety, is straw-yellow; it is floral and fruity on the nose, with hints of white fruit; on the palate it is dry to sweet, fresh, smooth, with a slightly fruity flavour. It can also be a Frizzante or Vivace wine. Calabria PGI Rosso, alone or with the specification of grape variety, ranges from pale ruby-red to garnet red, depending on the grape variety; the nose is full, with characteristic fragrances of red fruit; it is dry, sapid on the palate, with good body. It can also be a Frizzante or Vivace wine. Calabria PGI Rosato, alone or with the specification of grape variety, ranges from pale to deep pink, depending on the type of vinification and grape variety; it is delicately fruity on the nose; it is dry, harmonious and fresh on the palate. It can also be a Frizzante or Vivace wine. Calabria PGI Spumante Bianco, alone or with the specification of grape variety, is straw-yellow with persistent foam; it is fragrant on the nose; it is sapid on the palate, ranging from extra-brut to dry. Calabria PGI Spumante Rosé, alone or with the specification of grape variety, is pink, varying in intensity, and has a persistent perlage; it is ample and complex on the nose; on the palate it is fresh and harmonious, ranging from extra-brut to dry. Calabria PGI Spumante Rosso, alone or with the specification of grape variety, is red, varying in intensity, with persistent foam; it is fragrant and delicate on the nose; it is full, extra-brut to dry on the palate. Calabria PGI Passito Bianco is intense straw-yellow; it is decisive on the nose; on the palate it is sweet and delicate. Calabria PGI Passito Rosso, alone or with the specification of grape variety, is deep red; it is pleasantly intense on the nose; on the palate it is sweet and harmonious. Calabria PGI Novello, alone or with the specification of grape variety, is an intense red; the nose displays complex fruity notes; it is smooth and harmonious on the palate. Passito wine must be produced with grapes that have been dried either on the vines or after the harvest with a forced air system, assuring a minimum natural alcohol level of 14% vol.
Grape variety specifications
The Calabria PGI with specification of one of the grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Calabria region, is reserved for wines that are obtained from grapes originating from vineyards on the producer’s land made up of at least 85% of the corresponding grape variety. A maximum of 15% of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, can be used to produce the above-mentioned musts and wines, pure or combined. Calabria PGI wines with specification of grape variety must display the organoleptic properties of the specified grape variety, as well as the specific characteristics indicated for wines of the same colour.
