Description of product typologies
Brunello di Montalcino PDO is ruby-red, tending towards garnet red; the impact on the nose is intense, exuberant and of appreciable depth, with evident fragrances of red fruit and hints of spices and brushwood; the palate is dynamic thanks to lively tannins, with evident fruitiness and a blend of alcohol and acidity offering robust, harmonious and persistent sensations. It can display Riserva on the label. Brunello di Montalcino PDO must have been aged for at least twenty-four months in oak barrels, and cannot be released for consumption before January 1st of the year following the termination of 5 years ageing, a period that is calculated from the year in which the grapes were harvested. Brunello di Montalcino PDO Riserva can be released for consumption after January 1st of the year following the termination of 6 years ageing, a period that is calculated from the year in which the grapes were harvested. Before being released for consumption, Brunello di Montalcino PDO wines must have undergone a maturing period in the bottle of at least 4 months; at least 6 months for the Riserva. The processes of vinification, storage, ageing in wood, bottling and maturation in the bottle must be carried out within the production area.

Specifications designed to specify the type of farm the bottlers have are permitted, such as Viticoltore (Winemaker), Fattoria (Farm), Tenuta (Holding), Podere (Small Farm) and other similar terms, in compliance with current provisions.
