Description
The Vorios Mylopotamos Rethymnis Kritis PDO is an extra-virgin olive oil obtained from the olives of the varieties Koroneiki (at least 90%) and Hondrolia (10%).
Production Area
The production area of the extra-virgin olive oil Vorios Mylopotamos Rethymnis Kritis PDO is within the administrative boundaries of the municipal areas of Angeliana, Agia, Achlades, Erfi, Melidoni, Panormos, Perama, Prines, Roumeli, Sisses, Skepasti, Skouloufia in the prefecture of Rethymno, in the Crete region.
Production Method
the gathering of the olives takes place using small combs or wooden sticks. The gathered olives are transported to the oil mill for pressing inside plastic baskets or natural bags holding 30 kg or 50 kg. The pressing of the olives, which are cleaned from gathering residues (they need to be 95% intact), takes place in classic or centrifuging oil mills that guarantee the best processing conditions at a low temperature, which never surpasses 30°C. The processing of the olives takes place within three days after the gathering. The fight against the olive fly, its main enemy, is done with attractive substances sprayed from the soil, using biologic methods without any treatment.

The gathering of the olives takes place from November through January, and they are pressed with mechanical means at a temperature lower than 27°C. The low temperature makes it possible to maintain taste, flavour and all nutritional components.
