Production Area
The production area of Verdicchio di Matelica PDO is within parts of the territory of the municipalities of Matelica, Esanatoglia, Gagliole, Castelraimondo, Camerino and Pioraco in the Province of Macerata, and parts of Cerreto d’Esi and Fabriano in the Province of Ancona, in The Marches region.
Blends
White, Spumante, Passito: min. 85% Verdicchio, pure or with the addition of non-aromatic grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%.
Description of product typologies
Verdicchio di Matelica PDO Bianco has a pale straw-yellow colour; the nose reveals a fragrance of not quite ripe fruit, highland meadow flowers and brushwood; it is dry, smooth and mellow on the palate, tending towards fresh, with a delicate bitter fragrance. Verdicchio di Matelica PDO Spumante has a straw-yellow colour, with greenish highlights and a fine and persistent perlage; the aromatic notes of the nose burst with fragrances of fresh fruit and a floral bouquet of daisies, jasmine and white freesia; it is fresh and lively on the palate, with hints of fruit, vanilla and bread crust. It can be sold in typologies ranging from Extra-brut to Dry.Verdicchio di Matelica PDO Passito varies from straw-yellow to amber in colour; the nose offers intense and warm fragrances of candied and dried fruit, which blend together with balsamic sensations; the sensations of the nose return on the palate, giving the wine a sweet, harmonious and velvety flavour with hints of honey and a delicate bitter aftertaste. Verdicchio di Matelica PDO Passito wine must be produced with grapes that have been dried for a certain period of time; the drying period must be concluded by March 30th of the year following that in which the grapes were harvested and vinification by October 30th of the year in which the grapes were produced. This procedure must ensure that the grapes have a minimum natural alcohol level of 15% at the end of the drying period. Verdicchio di Matelica Passito PDO wine cannot be made available for consumption before December 1st of the year following that in which the grapes were produced.
