The Cannara PGI is reserved for the following types of wine: Red and Red Passito. The Indication also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Cannara PGI is within the entire territory of the municipalities of Cannara, Bettona, Bevagna in the Province of Perugia, in the Umbria region.
Description of product typologies
Cannara PGI Rosso, alone or with the specification of grape variety, is vivid ruby-red, varying in intensity and tending towards garnet red with ageing; it is delicate on the nose and spicy if aged; it is full, smooth, bitter, fruity, herbaceous and slightly tannic on the palate, with hints of toasted wood when aged. Cannara PGI Passito Rosso, alone or with the specification of grape variety, is red, varying in intensity, to garnet red; it is delicate on the nose and spicy if aged; on the palate it is sweet, full, smooth, harmonious and fruity.
Grape variety specifications
The Cannara PGI with the specification of one of the grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Umbria region, is reserved for wines that are obtained from grapes originating from vineyards on the producer’s land made up of at least 85% of the corresponding grape variety. A maximum of 15% of similarly-coloured grapes originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area can be used, pure or combined, to produce the above-mentioned musts and wines. Cannara PGI with two grape variety specifications, including the Passito wine, is reserved for wines obtained from grapes obtained from vineyards on the producer’s land made up of the corresponding varieties, on the condition that the wine derives exclusively from grapes produced by the two specified varieties, and that the quantity of grapes produced by each of the two is higher than 15% of the total. The specification of the grape varieties must appear on the label in descending order with respect to the actual percentage of grapes obtained from them. Cannara PGI wines with the specification of one or two of the grape varieties can also be produced as Passito. Cannara PGI wines with specification of grape variety must display the organoleptic properties of the specified grape variety, as well as the specific characteristics indicated for wines of the same colour.
