Description
The Barletta PDO is reserved for the following typologies of wine: White, Red (including Novello) Rosé. The Designation also incorporates grape variety specifications: Malvasia Bianca and Uva di Troia (or Nero di Troia).
Production Area
The production area of Barletta PDO is within the entire Municipalities of Barletta, San Ferdinando di Puglia and Trinitapoli, as well as parts of the administrative territory of Andria and Trani in the Province of Barletta- Andria-Trani, in the Apulia region.
Blends
White (incl. Semi-Sparkling): min. 60% Malvasia Bianca, pure or with the addition of other white grape varieties, max. 40%. Red (incl. Riserva), Rosé (incl. Semi-Sparkling), Novello: min. 70% Uva di Troia, pure or with the addition of other black grape varieties, max. 30%.
Description of product typologies
Barletta PDO Bianco is straw yellow in colour, varying in intensity; it opens with floral fragrances on the nose followed by almond and aromatic herbs; it is smooth and warm on the palate, with a good level of acidity and citron hints. It can also be a Semi-Sparkling wine. Barletta PDO Rosso is ruby-garnet-red in colour, tending to assume orange highlights with age; it displays intense fragrances on the nose, reminiscent of rose petals, marasca and red mulberry, with mineral notes; it is warm and embracing on the palate with delicate tannins. Riserva can be displayed on the label if the wine has been aged for at least 2 years, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced, of which at least one year must be in wooden barrels. The Barletta PDO Novello is ruby-red in colour, varying in intensity; the nose displays fragrances that are characteristic of a young wine, at times fruity; it is dry, harmonious and pleasant on the palate. Barletta PDO Rosato is pink in colour, varying in intensity; the nose displays strong vinous fragrances, at times fruity; on the palate it is dry and harmonious, with a persistent finish. It can also be a Semi-Sparkling wine
Grape variety specifications
Barletta PDO may display the specifications of the following grape varieties. From white grape varieties: min. 90% Malvasia Bianca, pure or with the addition of other white grape varieties specified by the Apulia Regional Authorities as being suitable for cultivation in the Murgia Centrale area, max. 10%: characterised by a straw yellow colour, varying in intensity; the nose is delicate, with a characteristic, fruity fragrance; dry and harmonious on the palate. From red grape varieties (incl. Riserva): min. 90% Uva di Troia or Nero di Troia, pure or with the addition of other black grape varieties, max. 10%: characterised by a ruby-red colour, tending towards garnet with orange highlights with aging; characteristically vinous on the nose; dry with harmonious body. Barletta PDO Nero di Troia or Uva di Troia may display Riserva on the label if they have been aged for at least 2 years, commencing November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced, of which at least one year must be in wooden barrels.

The Barletta PDO designation can be followed by Vigna (Vineyard) with the relative toponym.
