The Murgia PGI is reserved for the following typologies of wine: White, Red, Rosé, Spumante, Spumante Rosé, White Passito, Red Passito, White Overripe Grape (uve stramature), Red Overripe Grape, Red Novello and Rosé Novello. The Indication also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.
Production Area
The production area of Murgia PGI is within the entire territory of the Province of Bari and the territory of the municipalities of Barletta, Andria, Trani, Bisceglie, Canosa di Puglia and Minervino Murge in the Province of Barletta-Andria-Trani, in the Apulia region.
Blends
White, red and rosé wines with the Murgia PGI must be obtained from grapes originating from vineyards, in a business environment, with one or more red/white grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the region.
Description of product typologies
Murgia PGI Bianco, alone or with specification of variety, is straw-yellow in colour; the nose offers floral and fruity fragrances according to the grapes; it is dry and fresh on the palate, dry to medium-sweet, with a fruity flavour and good persistence. It can also be produced as a Semi-Sparkling wine. Murgia PGI Rosso, alone or with specification of variety, is ruby-red to garnet in colour; the nose is delicate, with fragrances of red fruit, spices, aromatic herbs and aromatic complexity deriving from the grapes; it is dry to medium-sweet and harmonious on the palate, with good body. It can also be produced as Semi-Sparkling. Murgia PGI Rosé is pink in colour; it displays fruity fragrances on the nose; it is dry, harmonious and fresh on the palate, with the characteristics of the grapes of origin. It can also be produced as a Semi-Sparkling wine. Murgia PGI Spumante, alone or with specification of variety, is straw-yellow colour with golden highlights and a fine and persistent perlage; the nose is fragrant and complex, with the typical aromas of secondary fermentation in bottles; it is balanced and harmonious on the palate, at times sweet. Murgia PGI Spumante Rosé, alone or with specification of variety, is pink in colour with fine and persistent foam; the nose is complex, with the typical aromas of secondary fermentation; it is fresh and harmonious on the palate, tending towards semi-sweet. Murgia PGI Passito Bianco, alone or with specification of variety, is straw to golden-yellow in colour; the nose is delicate and persistent; it is harmonious on the palate, with typical notes varying in sweetness. Murgia PGI Passito Rosso, alone or with specification of variety, is ruby-red in colour, tending towards garnet with aging; the nose is delicate and persistent; it is harmonious and balanced on the palate. Murgia PGI Uve Stramature Bianco is straw to golden-yellow in colour; the nose is delicately fruity and persistent; it is harmonious and sweet on the palate, with typical notes of dried fruit. Murgia PGI Uve Stramature Rosso is ruby-red in colour, tending towards garnet with aging; the fragrances are delicately characteristic and persistent on the nose; the aromas of the nose return on the palate with a good balance between sweet and dry. Murgia PGI Novello Rosso is ruby-red in colour; the nose is intense and pleasing, with hints of red fruit; it is lively and characteristic on the palate. Murgia PGI Novello Rosé is pink in colour; the nose displays evident fruity notes, typical of a young wine; the palate ranges from dry to medium-sweet.
Grape variety specifications
The Murgia PGI, with specification of one of the varieties suitable for cultivation in the region, is reserved for wines that are obtained from grapes originating from vineyard compounds, in a business environment, for at least 85% of the corresponding grape variety. Grapes originating from grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the region and different from those specified, can contribute to the production of the above-mentioned musts and wines, max. 15%. Murgia PGI wines with specification of a white grape variety can also be produced as Semi-Sparkling and Spumante; Murgia PGI wines with specification of a red grape variety can be produced as Passito and Novello. Murgia PGI wines with specification of grape variety can also be produced as Overripe Grape wine. Grapes destined for the production of Murgia PGI Passito and Overripe Grape wines can also be dried on the vines. Murgia PGI wines with specification of grape variety must display the organoleptic properties of the grape variety, as well as the indicated characteristics for the typology of wine.
