Production Area

The production area of Morellino di Scansano PDO is within the hilly territory of the Province of Grosseto, which incorporates the entire territory of the Municipality of Scansano and parts of Manciano, Magliano in Toscana, Grosseto, Campagnatico, Semproniano and Roccalbegna in the Tuscany region.


Red (including Riserva): min. 85% Sangiovese, pure or with the addition of non-aromatic grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%.

Description of product typologies

Morellino di Scansano PDO is ruby-red in colour, tending towards garnet with aging; the nose is rich with ethereal notes, with a subtle spiciness that blends with hints of marasca and ripe blackberry; it is mineral on the palate, with evident acidity and sweet, dense tannins.It can display Riserva on the label if the wine has been aged for a minimum period of 2 years, of which at least one year must be in wooden barrels; the aging period commences January 1st of the year following that in which the grapes were produced. Morellino di Scansano PDO wine cannot be made available for consumption before March 1st of the year following that of the grape harvest.

The Morellino di Scansano PDO designation can be followed by Vigna (Vineyard) with the relative toponym. The Morellino di Scansano PDO is distinguished by the mandatory registered mark of the Consortium for the Protection of Morellino di Scansano on the label. This mark is always displayed on the State Seal of the wine bottle according to current regulations.
