Production Area

The production area of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Colline Teramane PDO is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the Province of Teramo, in the Abruzzo region.

Blends

Red (including Riserva): minimum of 85% Montepulciano, pure or with the addition of non-aromatic grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, maximum 15%.

Description of product typologies

Montepulciano d’Abruzzo PDO is distinguished by its deep and intense ruby-red colour which tends towards garnet with aging; the nose is floral and fruity, with hints of ripe red fruit and spices; the palate is dry, full and pleasantly tannic. It can display Riserva on the label if the wine has undergone a minimum aging period of 2 years, of which at least 9 months must be in wooden recipients located within the production area. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Protected Designation of Origin wine cannot be made available for consumption before March 1st of the year following that in which the grapes were produced.

Geographical and sub-area specifications

The Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Protected Designation of Origin can be accompanied by five sub-geographical designations.Montepulciano d’Abruzzo PDO Casauria or Terre di Casauria is reserved for Red wine (including Riserva) produced in the Province of Pescara with 100% Montepulciano. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo PDO Casauria or Terre di Casauria must undergo a mandatory minimum aging period of 18 months, of which at least 9 must be in wooden recipients; for Riserva wines the aging period must be of at least 24 months, with a minimum of 9 in wooden recipients. The aging period commences November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced.Montepulciano d’Abruzzo PDO Casauria or Terre di Casauria must also be matured in bottles for at least 6 months following the mandatory aging period. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo PDO Terre dei Vestini is reserved for Red wine (including Riserva) produced in the Province of Pescara with a minimum of 90% Montepulciano, pure or with the addition of grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, maximum 10%.Montepulciano d’Abruzzo PDO Terre dei Vestini wine must be aged for a mandatory period of at least 18 months, with a minimum of 9 months in wooden recipients; for Riserva wines the aging period must be of at least 24 months, with a minimum of 9 in wooden recipients. The aging period commences on November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced.Montepulciano d’Abruzzo PDO Terre dei Vestini wine must also be matured in bottles for at least 3 months following the mandatory aging period and at least 6 months for Riserva wines.Montepulciano d’Abruzzo PDO Alto Tirino is reserved for Red wine (including Riserva) produced in the Province of L’Aquila with a minimum of 95% Montepulciano, pure or with the addition of grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, maximum 5%.Montepulciano d’Abruzzo PDO Alto Tirino wine must be aged/matured for a mandatory period of at least 12 months; for Riserva wines the aging/maturing period must be of at least 30 months.The aging/maturing period commences on November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo PDO Terre dei Peligni is reserved for Red wine (including Riserva) produced in the Province of L’Aquila with a minimum of 95% Montepulciano, pure or with the addition of grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, maximum 5%.Montepulciano d’Abruzzo PDO Terre dei Peligni wine must be aged/matured for a mandatory period of at least 24 months, with a minimum of 9 months in wooden recipients; for Riserva wines the aging/maturing period must be of at least 30 months, with a minimum of 9 months in wooden recipients.The aging/maturing period commences on November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo PDO Teate is reserved for Red wine (including Riserva) produced in the Province of Chieti with a minimum of 90% Montepulciano, pure or with the addition of grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, maximum 10%.Montepulciano d’Abruzzo PDO Teate wine must be aged/matured for a mandatory period of at least 21 months, with a minimum of 9 months in wooden recipients; for Riserva wines the aging/maturing period must be of at least 30 months, with a minimum of 9 months in wooden recipients.The aging/maturing period commences on November 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced.

Additional specifications

The Montepulciano d’Abruzzo PDO designation can be followed by Vigna (Vineyard) with the relative toponym.
