The Mitterberg PGI is reserved for the following typologies of wine: White, Red, Rosé, Passito and Novello. The Indication also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.

Production Area

The production area of Mitterberg PGI is within the territory of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano.

Blends

White, red and rosé wines with the Mitterberg PGI must be obtained from grapes originating from vineyards, in a business environment, with one or more red/white grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area.

Description of product typologies

Mitterberg PGI Bianco, alone or with specification of grape variety, is straw-yellow in colour; the nose is fruity, at times aromatic; it is full, harmonious and pleasing on the palate, with the characteristics of the grape variety of origin. Mitterberg PGI Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, varies from pale to intense ruby red or garnet in colour, typical of the grape variety of origin; the nose is delicate, with characteristic fragrances of red fruit, traces of spices and aromatic herbs and an aromatic complexity deriving from the grape varieties used; it is dry and smooth on the palate with good body. Mitterberg PGI Rosé, alone or with specification of grape variety, is pink in colour, varying in intensity; it displays delicate fruity fragrances on the nose; it is dry, harmonious and fresh on the palate, with the characteristics of the grape varieties of origin. Mitterberg PGI wines with the specification of one or more grape varieties can also be produced as Passito and Novello, with the organoleptic characteristics of the grape varieties used.

Grape variety specifications

The Mitterberg PGI, with the specification of one of the grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Province of Bolzano, is reserved for wines that are obtained from grapes originating from vineyard compounds, in a business environment, for at least 85% of the corresponding grape variety. Grapes similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%, can contribute, pure or combined, to the production of the above-mentioned musts and wines. Mitterberg PGI wines may refer to the names of two authorised grape varieties, on the condition that the wine is produced with 100% of the indicated varieties and that neither variety is present at less than 15%.

Additional specifications

The Mitterberg PGI wines with the specification of one or two of the above-mentioned grape varieties can also be produced as Semi-Sparkling wine. Mitterberg PGI wines with specification of grape variety must display the organoleptic properties of the grape variety, as well as the indicated characteristics for the typology of wine.
