The Marche PGI is reserved for the following typologies of wine: White, Red, Rosé, White Spumante, Red Spumante, Spumante Rosé, White Passito, Red Passito, Rosé Passito, White Overripe Grape, Red Overripe Grape, Rosé Overripe Grape, White Novello, Red Novello and Rosé Novello. The Indication also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.

Production Area

The production area of Marche PGI is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the provinces of Ancona, Ascoli-Piceno, Fermo, Macerata and Pesaro Urbino, in the Marches region.

Blends

White, red and rosé wines with the Marche PGI must be obtained from grapes originating from vineyards, in a business environment, with one or more red/white grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area.

Description of product typologies

Marche PGI Bianco, alone or with specification of variety, is straw-yellow in colour; the nose is floral and fruity according to the grapes; it is dry and fresh on the palate, with a fruity flavour and good persistence. It can be Semi-Sparkling or Filtered Sweet wine. Marche PGI Rosso, alone or with specification of variety, is red in colour; the nose is delicate, with characteristic fragrances of red fruit, spices, aromatic herbs and balsamic complexity deriving from the grapes; it is dry and sapid on the palate, with good body and at times evident tannins. It can be Semi-Sparkling or Filtered Sweet wine. Marche PGI Rosé, alone or with specification of variety, is pink in colour; it displays delicate fruity fragrances on the nose; it is dry, harmonious and fresh on the palate, with characteristics of the grapes of origin. It can be Semi-Sparkling or Filtered Sweet wine. Marche PGI Spumante Bianco (Qualità), alone or with specification of variety, has a soft straw-yellow colour; the nose is pleasing and characteristic, fragrant when Aromatic; it is fresh and dry on the palate. It can also be an Aromatic wine. Marche PGI Spumante Rosso (Qualità), alone or with specification of variety, has a red colour; the nose is pleasing and fresh; it is harmonious and dry on the palate. It can also be an Aromatic wine. Marche PGI Spumante Rosé (Qualità), alone or with specification of variety, is pink in colour; the nose offers pleasing floral notes; it is dry and harmonious on the palate. It can also be an Aromatic wine. Marche PGI Passito Bianco, alone or with specification of grape, is golden yellow in colour; the nose is pleasing, delicate and elegant; it is sweet and warm on the palate. It can also be Overripe Grape wine. Marche PGI Passito Rosso, alone or with specification of variety, is intense red in colour, tending towards purple; the nose is intense and characteristic of the grapes; it is sweet, warm and embracing on the palate. It can also be Overripe Grape wine. Marche PGI Passito Rosé, alone or with specification of variety, has a strong pink colour; the nose is intense and characteristic of the grapes; it is fairly sweet and warm on the palate. It can also be Overripe Grape wine. Marche PGI Novello Bianco, alone or with specification of variety, is white in colour; the nose offers delicate floral notes; it is intense and embracing on the palate. Marche PGI Novello Rosso, alone or with specification of variety, is bright red in colour; the nose is intense and floral; it is fresh and pleasing on the palate. Marche PGI Novello Rosato, alone or with specification of variety, is pink in colour; the nose is fresh and delicately floral; the floral notes return on the palate with a fresh and pleasing flavour.

Grape variety specifications

The Marche PGI, with specification of one of the grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Marche region, is reserved for wines that are obtained from grapes originating from vineyard compounds, in a business environment, for at least 85% of the corresponding grape variety. Grapes similar in colour and originating from other varieties suitable for cultivation in the region, max. 15%, can contribute to the production of the above-mentioned musts and wines. Marche PGI with specification of two grape varieties is reserved for the following typologies of wine: Quality Spumante, Quality Aromatic Spumante, Semi-Sparkling, Musts produced with partially fermented grapes, wines obtained from Dried Grapes, wines produced from Overripe grapes (or Passito wines), obtained from grapes originating from vineyard compounds, in a business environment and from corresponding varieties, on the condition that the wine derives exclusively from the indicated grapes, and that the quantity of grapes produced by each of the varieties is higher than 15% of the total. The varieties must be indicated in descending order, in respect to the actual contribution of the grape. Marche PGI wines with specification of grape variety must display the organoleptic properties of the variety, as well as the indicated characteristics for the typology of wine.
