The Lazio PGI is reserved for the following typologies of wine: White, Red, Rosé, White Spumante, Red Spumante, Spumante Rosé, White Passito, Red Passito, Passito Rosé, White Late Harvest, Red Late Harvest, Rosé Late Harvest and Novello. The Indication also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.

Production Area

The production area of Lazio PGI is within the entire territory of the Lazio region.

Blends

White, red and rosé wines with the Lazio PGI must be obtained from grapes originating from vineyards, in a business environment, with one or more red/white grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area.

Description of product typologies

Lazio PGI Bianco, alone or with specification of grape variety, is yellow in colour, at times tending towards greenish to golden-yellow; the nose offers and fruity fragrances; it is dry and fresh on the palate, with a slightly fruity flavour and good persistence. It can also be a Semi-Sparkling wine. Lazio PGI Rosso is red in colour, tending towards garnet with aging; the nose is delicate, with characteristic fragrances of red fruit, spices, aromatic herbs and balsamic complexity deriving from the grapes; it is dry and velvety on the palate with good body. It can also be Semi-Sparkling and Novello wine. Lazio PGI Rosé is cherry-pink in colour; it displays delicate fruity fragrances on the nose; it is dry, harmonious and fresh on the palate, with the characteristics of the grape varieties of origin. It can also be a Semi-Sparkling wine. Lazio PGI Spumante Bianco, alone or with specification of grape variety, has a clear straw-yellow colour with a fine and persistent perlage; the nose is fine with characteristics of the grape variety; it is harmonious on the palate. Lazio PGI Spumante Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, has a deep ruby-red colour with fine and persistent foam; the nose is intense and characteristic; it is harmonious and balanced on the palate. Lazio PGI Spumante Rosé, alone or with specification of grape variety, is pink in colour with purple highlights and a fine and persistent perlage; the nose is pleasing and elegant; it is harmonious on the palate. Lazio PGI Passito Bianco, alone or with specification of grape variety, is yellow to amber in colour depending on the age of the wine; the nose offers fruity sensations; it is sweet and sapid on the palate. Lazio PGI Passito Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, is red in colour, tending towards garnet with aging; the nose is intense and characteristic; it is sweet and velvety on the palate. Lazio PGI Vendemmia Tardiva Bianco, alone or with specification of grape variety, is golden-yellow in colour; it is intense and characteristic on the nose; the palate is pleasing and velvety. Lazio PGI Vendemmia Tardiva Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, is red to garnet-red in colour; the fragrances are intense and characteristic on the nose; it is harmonious and embracing on the palate.

Grape variety specifications

The Lazio PGI, with specification of one of the varieties suitable for cultivation in the Lazio region, is reserved for wines that are obtained from grapes originating from vineyard compounds, in a business environment, for at least 85% of the corresponding grape variety. Grapes similar in colour and originating from other varieties suitable for cultivation in the region, max. 15%, can contribute to the production of the above-mentioned musts and wines. The Lazio PGI with the specification of two or three grape varieties is reserved for wines obtained from corresponding grapes originating from vineyard compounds, in a business environment, on the condition that the wine derives exclusively from the indicated grapes, and that the quantity of grapes produced by each of the varieties is higher than 15% of the total. The grape varieties must be indicated in descending order, in respect to the actual contribution of the grape. Lazio PGI wines with specification of grape variety must display the organoleptic properties of the variety, as well as the indicated characteristics for the typology of wine.
