Production Area

The production area of Falanghina del Sannio PDO is within the entire territory of the Province of Benevento, in the Campania region.

Blends

White, Spumante (incl. Spumante di Qualità, Spumante di Qualità Metodo Classico), Passito, Late Harvest: min. 85% Falanghina, pure or with the addition of non-aromatic grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%.

Description of product typologies

Falanghina del Sannio PDO Bianco is straw-yellow in colour; the nose is intense and fairly persistent, offering hints of gardenia and broom flowers, exotic fruit, white melon, citrus fruit and pear; it is medium-bodied, fairly smooth, persistent and acidulous on the palate, with good fragrance and minerality. Falanghina del Sannio PDO Spumante is pale straw-yellow in colour, with persistent foam and fine grained perlage; the nose is delicate and nicely intense, displaying fruity and fresh notes; it is dry and sapid on the palate. It is also available in the Spumante di Qualità and Spumante di Qualità Metodo Classico typologies. Falanghina del Sannio PDO Spumante and Falanghina del Sannio PDO Spumante di Qualità (incl. those with geographical indication) must be obtained by fermentation in autoclave; Falanghina del Sannio PDO Spumante di Qualità Metodo Classico (incl. those with geographical indication) must be obtained through traditional secondary fermentation in bottles and must remain on the lees for at least 12 months, commencing November 15th of the year in which the grapes were produced. Falanghina del Sannio PDO Passito is a sweet wine that is golden yellow in colour with particularly warm nuances; it is intense and persistent on the nose, displaying jammy hints of honey and candied fruit; the palate offers alcoholic warmth and is smooth, well-structured and persistent, with an extremely long persistence. Falanghina del Sannio PDO Passito wine (incl. those with geographical indication) must be obtained from grapes that have entirely or in part been dried, on the vines or immediately after picking, in a way that ensures a minimum natural alcohol level of 16%; the wine cannot be made available for consumption before June 1st of the year following that in which the grapes were produced. Falanghina del Sannio PDO Vendemmia Tardiva is straw-yellow in colour, tending towards golden and varying in intensity; the nose is complex and rich, offering floral and fruity fragrances; it is dry, full and balanced on the palate.

Geographical and sub-area specifications

The Falanghina del Sannio PDO may be accompanied by four sub-geographical designations: Falanghina del Sannio PDO Guardia Sanframondi or Guardiolo, Falanghina del Sannio PDO Sant’Agata dei Goti, Falanghina del Sannio PDO Solopaca, Falanghina del Sannio PDO Taburno. All four sub-geographical designations can be White, Spumante (incl. Spumante di Qualità, Spumante di Qualità Metodo Classico), Passito and Vendemmia Tardiva wines.The characteristics of the colour, fragrances and flavour of each specification are those typical of the grape variety and terroir of origin.

Additional specifications

The Falanghina del Sannio PDO designation can be followed by Vigna (Vineyard) with the relative toponym.
