The Daunia PGI is reserved for the following typologies of wine: White, Red, Rosé, Spumante, Spumante Rosé, White Passito, Red Passito, White from Uve Stramature (overripe grapes), Red from Uve Stramature, Red Novello and Novello Rosé. The Indication also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.

Production Area

The production area of Daunia PGI is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the Province of Foggia and Barletta-Andria-Trani, in the Apulia region.

Blends

White, red and rosé wines with the Daunia PGI must be obtained from grapes originating from vineyards, in a business environment, with one or more red/white grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area.

Description of product typologies

Daunia PGI Bianco, alone or with specification of grape variety, is straw-yellow in colour, varying in depth; the nose offers various floral and fruity fragrances, depending on the grape variety; it is dry and fresh on the palate, with a slightly fruity flavour and good persistence. It can also be a Semi-Sparkling wine. Daunia PGI Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, is ruby-red in colour, varying in intensity and tending towards garnet with aging; the nose is intense, with characteristic fragrances of red fruit and traces of spices and aromatic herbs; it is dry and sapid on the palate, at times with evident tannins, with good body, persistent final and significant elegance. It can also be a Semi-Sparkling wine. Daunia PGI Rosé, alone or with specification of grape variety, is pink in colour, varying in intensity; it displays delicate fruity fragrances; the palate is dry, harmonious fresh, with the characteristics of the grape variety of origin. It can also be a Semi-Sparkling wine. Daunia PGI Spumante, alone or with specification of grape variety, is straw-yellow in colour, varying in intensity, with possible golden highlights and fine, persistent foam; the nose is fragrant and complex, characteristic of secondary fermentation; it is fresh, sapid, fine, harmonious and often semi-sweet on the palate. Daunia PGI Spumante Rosé, alone or with specification of grape variety, is pink in colour, varying in intensity, with fine and persistent foam; it is fragrant and complex on the nose, with hints of red fruit; the palate is fresh, sapid and fine, with harmonious aromas of cherry blossom. Daunia PGI Passito Bianco, alone or with specification of grape variety, is straw to golden-yellow in colour; it offers characteristic and delicate fragrances with good persistence on the nose; the palate is dry-to-sweet and is typical and harmonious. Daunia PGI Passito Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, is ruby-red in colour, tending towards garnet with aging; the nose is delicate, characteristic and fairly persistent; it is typical, harmonious and velvety on the palate. Daunia PGI Bianco da Uve Stramature, alone or with specification of grape variety, varies from straw to golden-yellow in colour; the delicate and persistent fragrances on the nose are characteristic of the grape variety used; it is dry-to- sweet on the palate and extremely harmonious. Daunia PGI Rosso da Uve Stramature, alone or with specification of grape variety, is ruby-red in colour, tending towards garnet with aging; the nose is intense, extremely delicate and persistent; it is sweet-to-dry, typical and harmonious on the palate. Daunia PGI Novello Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, is ruby-red colour, varying in intensity; it is intense and pleasing on the nose, with characteristic fragrances of the grape variety; the palate is dry-to-medium-sweet flavour. Daunia PGI Novello Rosé, alone or with specification of grape variety, is pink in colour, varying in intensity; the nose is characteristic with fruity; it is lively on the palate, with a dry-to-medium-sweet flavour.

Grape variety specifications

The Daunia PGI, with the specification of one of the grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Province of Foggia, is reserved for wines that are obtained from grapes originating from vineyard compounds, in a business environment, for at least 85% of the corresponding grape variety. Grapes similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%, can contribute, pure or combined, to the production of the above-mentioned musts and wines. Daunia PGI wines with indication of grape variety can also be produced as Semi-Sparkling and Spumante, exclusively with the specification of white grape variety, Passito and Novello, exclusively with the specification of red grape variety. These wines can also be produced as “Vino prodotto da Uve Stramature” (Wine made from Overripe Grapes), originating from Late Harvest. The Daunia PGI with the written specification of “Lambrusco vinificato in bianco” (white vinified Lambrusco) is reserved for wines obtained from grapes originating from vineyard compounds, in a business environment, at least 85% of the Lambrusco Maestri grape variety. Wines with the specification of one of the black grape varieties can also be produced as Rosé. Daunia PGI wines can refer to the names of two grape varieties, on the condition that the wine is produced at 100% from the indicated varieties, and that the grape variety in the minority has a minimum presence of 15%. Daunia PGI wines with specification of grape variety must display the organoleptic properties of the grape variety, as well as the indicated characteristics for the typology of wine.
