The Costa Viola PGI is reserved for the following typologies of wine: White, Red, Rosé, Red Novello and Novello Rosé. The Indication also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.

Production Area

The production area of Costa Viola PGI is within the territory of the municipalities of Bagnara Calabra, Palmi, Scilla and Seminara in the Province of Reggio Calabria, in the Calabria region.

Blends

White, red and rosé wines with the Costa Viola PGI must be obtained from grapes originating from vineyards, in a business environment, with one or more red/white grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area.

Description of product typologies

Costa Viola PGI Bianco, alone or with specification of grape variety, is straw-yellow in colour, varying in intensity; the nose offers various degrees of floral and fruity fragrances depending on the grape variety used; it is dry and fresh on the palate. Costa Viola PGI Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, is ruby-red in colour, varying in intensity; the nose is delicate, with characteristic fragrances of red fruit and traces of spices and aromatic herbs, with sensations deriving from the grape variety used; the palate is dry and sapid, at times with evident tannins. Costa Viola PGI Rosé, alone or with specification of grape variety, is pink in colour, varying in intensity; it displays delicate fruity fragrances on the nose; it is dry, harmonious and fresh on the palate, with the characteristics of the grape varieties used. Costa Viola PGI Novello Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, is deep red in colour; the nose is intense and rich with fruity sensations; it is pleasantly harmonious on the palate. Costa Viola PGI Novello Rosé, alone or with specification of grape variety, is pink in colour, varying in intensity; the nose offers fine and persistent fragrances; it is pleasantly fresh on the palate, with notes of fruit and rose.

Grape variety specifications

The Costa Viola PGI, with the specification of one of the grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Calabria region, is reserved for wines that are obtained from grapes originating from vineyard compounds, in a business environment, for at least 85% of the corresponding grape variety. Grapes similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%, can contribute, pure or combined, to the production of the above-mentioned musts and wines. Costa Viola PGI wines with specification of grape variety must display the organoleptic properties of the grape variety, as well as the indicated characteristics for the typology of wine.
