The Contea di Sclafani PDO or Valledolmo-Contea di Sclafani PDO is reserved for the following typologies of wine: White, Red, White Reserve, Red Reserve, White Late Harvest and Red Late Harvest.

Production Area

The production area of Contea di Sclafani PDO is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the Provinces of Palermo, Caltanissetta, Agrigento, in the Sicily region.

Blends

White (incl. Riserva and Vendemmia Tardiva): min. 95% Catarratto. A maximum of 5% of other grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area may be used. Red (incl. Riserva and Vendemmia Tardiva): 0-100% Nero d’Avola and Perricone, individually or combined.

Description of product typologies

Contea di Sclafani PDO or Valledolmo-Contea di Sclafani PDO Bianco is straw-yellow in colour, varying in intensity, with greenish highlights; the nose immediately displays notes of tropical fruit, apple and flint; it is harmonious, dry and sapid on the palate, with a citrusy finish. Contea di Sclafani PDO or Valledolmo-Contea di Sclafani PDO Bianco Riserva is straw-yellow in colour, varying in intensity, at times with greenish highlights; it is pleasing, light and elegant on the nose; it is harmonious, characteristic and sapid on the palate.
Contea di Sclafani PDO or Valledolmo-Contea di Sclafani PDO Rosso has a ruby-red colour, varying in intensity, at times with purplish highlights; the nose offers evident suggestions of violet and blackberry, at times spicy notes, arriving at sensations of wet soil and Mediterranean scrub; it is predominantly warm on the palate, supported by intense freshness rounded with complex tannins. Contea di Sclafani PDO or Valledolmo-Contea di Sclafani PDO Rosso Riserva varies in colour, ranging from dark ruby red to garnet with aging; the nose is intense, fruity and at times spicy; it is dry, characteristic and well-structured on the palate. Contea di Sclafani PDO or Valledolmo-Contea di Sclafani PDO Vendemmia Tardiva Bianco ranges from straw to golden yellow in colour; the nose is characteristic and persistent; it is harmonious on the palate, ranging from dry to sweet. Contea di Sclafani PDO or Valledolmo-Contea di Sclafani PDO Vendemmia Tardiva Rosso is dark ruby red in colour, tending towards garnet with aging; the nose is light and persistent; it is characteristic on the palate, ranging from sweet to dry. It must be produced with grapes that have been dried on the vines and vinified in wooden recipients, as well as having undergone a maturing period of at least six months in wooden vats with a maximum capacity of 500 litres. The grapes cannot be picked before October 1st. The wine can be made available for consumption 18 months after November 1st of the year in which the grapes were harvested.
