The Colline Lucchesi PDO is reserved for the following typologies of wine: White, Red, Rosé, Vin Santo and Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice. The Designation also incorporates numerous grape variety specifications.

Production Area

The production area of Colline Lucchesi PDO is within the territory of the municipalities of Lucca, Capannori and Porcari in the Province of Lucca, in the Tuscany region.

Blends

White, Spumante: 40-80% Trebbiano Toscano, 10-60% Greco and/or Grechetto and/or Vermentino and/or Malvasia del Chianti and/or Chardonnay and/or Sauvignon, pure or with the addition of grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 25%. Red (incl. Riserva): 45-80% Sangiovese, 10-50% Canaiolo and/or Ciliegiolo and/or Merlot and/or Syrah, pure or with the addition of grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 30%, with the exception of Aleatico and Muscat, max 5%.Vin Santo: registered grapes originating from white grape varieties. Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice: registered grapes originating from red grape varieties.

Description of product typologies

Colline Lucchesi PDO Bianco is intense straw-yellow in colour, with a golden glow; the nose displays fragrances of ripe white fruit; it is dry on the palate with hints of flint. Colline Lucchesi PDO Rosso has a ruby-red colour, varying in intensity and tending towards garnet with aging; the nose is dominated by notes of fruits of the forest, hints of leather and notes of sugared coffee; the palate releases a delicate and elegant spiciness and a slightly tannic element heightens appreciation of this wine, which has a pleasing blackberry aftertaste. It can display Riserva on the label if the wine has undergone an aging period of at least 2 years and is produced with grapes that have a minimum natural alcohol level of 11,5%. The aging period commences January 1st of the year in which the grapes were produced. Colline Lucchesi PDO Vin Santo has a beautifully intense golden-yellow colour which can tend towards amber; the nose is pleasing, harmonious and characteristic; it is dry, velvety and harmonious on the palate and the semi-sweet typology is pleasantly sweet.Colline Lucchesi PDO Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice varies from pale to intense pink in colour, with garnet highlights; the nose is intense and characteristic; it is sweet, smooth and velvety on the palate. Colline Lucchesi PDO Vin Santo and Colline Lucchesi PDO Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice wines must be obtained from grapes that have undergone a natural drying process and that have not been mashed before December 1st of the harvest year, and no later than the following March 31st; the grapes must be dried in suitable areas and must reach a sugar content of no less than 27%. Partial dehydration with ventilated air is permitted. The wines cannot be made available for consumption before Decembre 1st of the third year following that in which the grapes were produced.

Grape variety specifications

The Colline Lucchesi PDO may display the specifications of the following grape varieties. From white grape varieties (incl. Spumante): min. 85% Vermentino, Sauvignon, pure or with the addition of grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%.From red grape varieties (incl. Riserva): min. 85% Sangiovese, Merlot, pure or with the addition of grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%, with the exception of Aleatico and Muscat.

Additional specifications

Colline Lucchesi PDO wines may display Secco (Dry), Abboccato (Medium-Sweet), Amabile (Semi-Sweet) and Dolce (Sweet) on the label, in accordance with European product labelling regulations.
