Production Area
The production area of Colli della Toscana centrale PGI is within the territory of numerous municipalities in the Provinces of Arezzo, Florence, Pistoia, Prato and Siena, in the Tuscany region.
Blends
White (incl. Semi-Sparkling): Trebbiano Toscano, Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Malvasia del Chianti, Vermentino, Sauvignon and Riesling Renano, pure or with the addition of grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area.Red, Rosé: Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Pinot Nero, Canaiolo Nero, Syrah and Gamay, pure or with the addition of grape berries similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area. Novello: at least one of the following grape varieties, pure or combined, must be present: Sangiovese, Merlot, Canaiolo Nero and Gamay.
Description of product typologies
Colli della Toscana centrale PGI Bianco, alone or with specification of grape variety, is pale yellow with green highlights or pale to medium straw-yellow in colour; it is simple and floral on the nose, basically consisting of primary and secondary aromas, and with particular grape varieties the aromatic component evolves into tertiary aromas characterised by the same; on the palate it is slightly acidulous and fresh, and in the case of tertiary aromas it offers a specific and persistent aftertaste. It can also be a Semi-Sparkling wine. Colli della Toscana centrale PGI Rosso, alone or with specification of grape variety, can be various tones of red in colour, tending towards garnet with aging; it offers primary and secondary aromas on the nose, is simple with evident vivacity, yet tends towards greater elegance with aging and the consequent evolution of tertiary aromas; it is young and easy on the palate, with specific polyphenols in wines suitable for prolonged maturation improving the structure and offering a persistent aftertaste . It can also be Novello wine. Colli della Toscana centrale PGI Rosé, alone or with specification of grape variety, is medium pink in colour, with tones that vary according to the grape varieties and type of vinification used; the nose is predominantly characterised by the primary aromas of the grape variety; it is balanced on the palate, both in the acid and polyphenol components, smoothened by the sugar content determined by defined laws.
Grape variety specifications
The Colli della Toscana centrale PGI, with the specification of one of the grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Tuscany region, is reserved for wines that are obtained from grapes originating from vineyard compounds, in a business environment, for at least 85% of the corresponding grape variety. Grapes similar in colour and originating from other grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the concerned area, max. 15%, can contribute, pure or combined, to the production of the above-mentioned musts and wines. In the presentation of Colli della Toscana centrale PGI wine, reference to the name of two grape varieties is permitted on the condition that the wine derives exclusively from the two indicated grape varieties, and that the quantity of grapes produced by one of the two is higher than 15% of the total. The Colli della Toscana centrale PGI with the specification of two grape varieties, is reserved for wines obtained from corresponding grapes originating from vineyard compounds, in a business environment, on the condition that the wine derives exclusively from the indicated grapes, and that the quantity of grapes produced by each of the two is higher than 15% of the total. The grape varieties must be indicated on the label in descending order, in respect to the actual contribution of the grape. Colli della Toscana centrale PGI wines with specification of grape variety must display the organoleptic properties of the grape variety, as well as the indicated characteristics for the typology of wine.
